Hi
You say you had not used the battery for ages.
Did the charger cable and battery show the normal led indications when you first plugged in ?
Charger green then red - Battery button blink when connected

Got my Dripper Pro today and very impressed excellent finish and coil pre-installed/spare supplied. Great flavour and clouds of vapour 1.9ohm @ 3.6v. Perfect match for the Provari and I can see this becoming my "reference" dripper |

You are right when the top goes on any leaking stops.
I fill to the top blow through the airhole the put top on. The juice does drop to the base of the cone part though.....
