Well, I was looking through the mods on here, and taking inspiration from the G4 in an Arry Tank, I thought I could come up with something that was a little less hassle to put together, that allowed you to fill the tank full, and didn't leak.
The end result is the Raw G4 Tank Mod.
To build this mod you need the following ingredients:-
1 Arry Carto Tank (the only one I had spare was the large capacity one - approx 7 mls plus the 1ml that the G4 will give me, so an 8ml capacity tank, you can of course use the smaller capacity tank).
1 G4 Clear Cartomiser
1 Pipe/Tube Cutter
1 White softcap from a Cartomiser
1 needle
1 sharp knife
Now because we're using sharp objects, remember to obtain an adult's permission or assistance when creating this mod
Here are all the things you will need.....
The first thing that we have to do, is to trim down the G4 just a little to make it the same length as a standard cartomiser. We do this using the pipe cutter, but before you start cutting, take the original G4 cap, and push it firmly inside. This will help keep the tube stiff, will give the pipe cutter purchase, and will also help prevent the G4 case from cracking.
Be patient with the pipe cutter, and do this part gently because we're only shaving around 4mm from the top of the G4. I don't own a dremel, but suspect that the cutter would be too risky, besides, you want to keep the inner tube intact. This is very important as the inner tube will end up sitting proud of the G4, and will ultimately help provide a nice air tight seal when finally assembled.
Here is a pic of the trimmed down G4, and you can see that I've not shaved off very much at all....
Now that we have the trimmed down G4, we need to make sure that the G4 will get fed juice from the main tank body when assembled. To do this we use the needle to make a hole right at the bottom of the tank part of the G4. Be very careful doing this, as I ended up with the back part of the needle sliding into my skin. This does only make a very small hole, though, so I used the tip of a sharp and pointy knife to gently carve the hole a little larger... so it now looks like this:-
We now need to push this through the base cap of the carto tank. Now, we can't escape the fact that the G4 is narrowly wider than a standard cartomiser. The base cap of the Arry Carto Tank is designed, well, for a cartomiser, so this next part was a little difficult.
Because I didn't want to shatter the case, I boiled some water, put it into a small expresso coffee cup.
With the G4 attached to an old broken Ego battery, I immersed the tip quickly, shaking off excess liquid, and then pushed it through the base cap. This took quite a bit of force, but I accomplished it by holding the base cap and the ego battery in a tea towel to maintain my grip and used a clockwise screwing action... this took the G4 all the way in, leaving just the base of the G4 sitting proudly. I then turned the whole thing upside down, and placing the edge of the Delrin cap on the edge of a breadboard, I used a rolling pin to hammer at the base of the Ego. The wood is important here. If you use a hammer you increase the shock transmitted through the plastic and increase the likelihood of something cracking. At this stage you are NOT trying to get the entire base of the G4 inside the cap. That simply won't happen without something breaking. You just need it to be wedged in there enough to make a seal. Mine sits about 1.5mm proud of the base of the cap, which is fine.
The end result, will look something like this:-
Notice that the stem of the G4 is looking distorted? That's perfectly normal, we've just forced it through a tight hole, that is smaller than its own diameter. The distortion will be resolved once everything is sorted, and the white cartomiser cap has been pushed in place. Don't believe me? This is what it looks like with the cap in place (pre final assembly):-
The cap helps to reform the stem of the G4 and add rigidity to the final build.
Now, we need to reassemble the Arry Carto Tank.
Don't put the lid on yet! We need to fill the G4 and the carto. Here is one advantage of using the G4. When using a regular cartomiser in this tank, Arry recommends that you don't fill it completely full, and that you fill to the level of the wadding inside the carto. With the G4 there is no wadding, so yes, you guessed it, fill it all right to the top, well allowing for the fact that there's a lid to push onto the tank of course!
Finally, push the white carto cap onto the top of the G4, this will act as a final, inner seal. You'll see now that the inner tube to the G4 pushes right through the cap, and mine actually sits flush with the top. When you've done that, put the top cap of the carto tank in place, and the mod is complete!
When it's all sealed, it should be completely leak free, so it's not a problem to lie it on it's side. In this aspect you can see how much liquid I've actually got in here, there's not much of an air bubble there!
Attach it to your favourite PV, add a drip tip...
And vape!
This was a fairly simple mod. All we're essentially doing is cutting down a G4. I had the idea, and from start to finish, it took me 30 minutes to complete, that's inclusive of taking the pictures, and documenting the process. I was pleasantly surprised by the G4, I honestly expected it to shatter, and it didn't, proving it to be a lot more robust than a clearo...
I hope you all enjoy my first published mod.
