Probably a lot of empty wallets and purses out there right now but this lot is still available.

DiscoDes sonicflowjoe I was in the post office today sending parcels and the lady at the counter says tomorrow is the last day to guarantee first class delivery. That's not to say anything posted Monday wont get there Tuesday or even Wednesday if there is post Christmas Eve. Jay

I did have a vamo as well but I lost it. I do like the idea of mechs, it just confuses me a bit in terms of how to get the right batteries, and getting a the right resistance in the coil. and surely you would have to change the battery as soon as it drops a bit of voltage as you would get a reduced performance. You could get a nemesis clone and a kick which will regulate the wattage delivery and keep it constant until the battery needs changing. A kick also adds a degree of safety aswell. For me it's regulated all the way though and if your not fully sure about ohms law etc most people would advise not to rush into mech mods. You could put a wanted thread up in the classifieds if you come to a decision on what you want. It will save you a few pennies enabling you to get a little more for your money and as your probably aware nobody on here would sell you anything with any issues unless they clearly stated it. Jay

buggritt if I'm burning anything I pretty much always leave the lappy to it's business and have nothing else running. I'm one of these that if I want something to run I'll set it running, so from boot up I have nothing running in the background. Start/msconfig/startup/disable all. Then start the necessaries according to the task at hand. Jay

decoy you were right regards the lower burn speed. I've tried two burns at x4 burn speed and both have worked so fingers crossed it's now resolved. It does add a bit of time to the project time as I'm used to burning at x8. Does this suggest that the burner is a bit pants then and not upto the job the other machines can do without problem ? enjay thats the good thing about nero, you don't need to convert first, it recognises most formats and creates a DVD whether it be MP4, matroska, xvid or whatever. With the Klite codec pack installed I've not come across anything it doesn't recognise......... yet. Jay

I've now tried ashampoo and it just wont recognise my files. I go to the add DVD from folders and it then says theres no DVD to add. I'm thinking they're the wrong format, MP4 and Xvid ? It's going to be a bit long winded if I have to convert every file I want to burn to a different format first. Nero does that for me, well at least it did when on a different machine.

enjay I've seen ashampoo mentioned a couple of times while researching my problem. Can you insert your own chapters wherever you want with this software ? Jay

@johanino I've tried different DVD players to no avail. decoy going back to what you said about using DVD+ I can't be 100% sure the DVD I got out my desk was a + as I mostly use printable discs with no markings. Thing is though I can't buy just a single + disc to try. A new DVD burner would cost me about £17 which is about double the cost of a spindle of DVD's and would probably save more ball ache. I'll try reducing the burn speed first though but I've always used the preset speeds with no problems. Jay

decoy DVD+ are not used so much now but I believe one of the discs I used that I had in my desk was from a batch of +'s I bought when my usual a were not available to use in the desktop. So I've actually tried four brands/types of disc. Jay

As a few of you are aware I've been using a new laptop recently. It's a dell inspiron 1764 running windows 7 home premium. I've always used nero for burning my movies onto disc but since installing it onto this new laptop I'm having difficulties. The discs seem to burn fine but when putting them into a DVD player I either get a bad disc message or some other error on screen.
I've tried three different versions of nero, nero 7, nero 10 and nero 2014 all give me the same results. I've also tried three different brands of decent quality DVD's to burn onto with the same results.
The versions of nero I have used all seem to be fine on my desktop and the nero 10 was fine on my Toshiba laptop which has now been handed down to my son after he dropped his.
I should add aswell the DVD's although giving errors in DVD players play fine on the laptop using the drive they were burnt in. I don't like hooking up to the TV with a HDMI cable and using the laptop as a DVD player though. I want to be able to burn to discs that are playable as I have always done.
So what do you guys reckon ? The only thing I can think of doing now is changing the actual DVD burner in the machine. Or perhaps different software. The different software isn't a route I particularly fancy though as I like nero and the fact it's so easy to add my own chapters with a few clicks and as yet I haven't come across software that is as easy to do this with or even if I can it takes double the time to create and burn the movie. Also nero with the klite codec recognises any movie format and just creates a DVD disc.

Thank you all so much for your help. The laptop is up and running just fine now. Without this place I think it might have ended up landing in the garden.

Delete all the partitions and install to the free space. windows will automatically fill the drive with one big partition. Everything else get a big yes from me. Ah OK thank you. Also I'm firing up the desktop as a reserve for further questions and maybe the other lappy aswell...... back up's for back ups........ I learnt that from vaping lol. Jay

Ripshod by install disc do you mean a copy of windows ? Jay Yep, edited the above too. You will need a legit windows key tho - I know a lot of old lappies come with the label ripped. I've got the windows key for this machine. So it looks like fresh install, check the advanced tab for options first maybe as decoy mentioned. If I can't see a fix there delete all the partitions except C: and install there. This should then leave me with just the one drive not partitioned when I've finished ? Then install all the updates and drivers from dell as I have done to get to this point ? Jay
