Today I had to go for a breathing test. Spirometry and a couple of others. The reason for this was a very bad bout of bronchitis which lasted 5 weeks despite copious amounts of antibiotics. I was told last week that I have genetic COPD. I never knew it could be genetic but it can and I have it. My age ( under 45 ) was what made me having it unusual so genetic was looked at. So I was destined to get this, but not knowing that I happily smoked my way through the last 23 years. Todays tests confirmed that I have obstructive lung disease in the bottom part of my lungs. I was also told that - Stopping smoking can not reverse this, or make it even a little better, the damage is done and will stay done, but smoking would make it worse so this is why I have to stop. If there are any young smokers/ ex smokers reading this - if you stop smoking before the age of 35 your lungs can repair themselves. Today I have had 2 normal ciggies, so that is an improvement on yesterdays 5.

Wow Sammy that must be a lot to take in, I am so sorry you've been given such unwelcome news. The good thing is that you've caught it early and found the perfect way to help you off the cigs.

Just got my 19 year old son to stop smoking thank god, he is happy with e-lites and me refilling them ( but he only smoked about 5 a day ). I was lucky that he had not long started and I said we will both give up together, If I can go from 30 a day 25 year habit to e cigs so can you. We both now smoke free over 6 weeks

Sammy sorry to hear your news. Glad you are reducing your intake and hopefully you will have none soon. I hope you can reach that goal.
My mum had COPD and it wasn't easy for her, I can only say take care and try and look after yourself. Sending you my best wishes.

sammy13, sorry, that news must have been like being hit by a brick. Good for you that you've cut right down & you will stop, never beat yourself up about having a cig though.

Sorry to hear about that Sammy. My mother in law had COPD. She was diagnosed with it in her early 30's. She was also asthematic and smoked over 40 stinkies a day.. She stopped smoking when she needed oxygen 16yrs a day and still lived to be a ripe old 86yrs.. So don't despair... I started using an e-cig over 9 months ago and haven't had a single stinkie in that time and I smoked 40 a day too... Good luck hunni

Hi Sammy dont give up just yet last year i was diagnosed with the same please read the thread below i posted a while ago if you have been smoking heavily in the recent months there is light at the end of the tunnel as i found out with copd. allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/thread/22497/3-months-vaping-copdi am 40 and wasnt taking my diagnosis seriously until this year and then started vaping the test results are there for you to see yourself vaping will definitely help, my mother also has copd and she started vaping a couple of weeks ago cant wait to see her spirometry test in a few months as she was much worse than me. Dont let it get you down things can only get better if you change for the better. Regards Rich

Welcome, Your story is exactly why we all need to do what we can To defend e cigs from too many restrictions. They should be promoting them not trying to work out how to ban them!

Oh Rosie was a girl alright and she lived in Spain for 25 years after being diagnosed with COPD.. She only came home once a year for a month but decided to live back here when she got to 78 as she felt it time to come home.. God rest her soul

I won't have another spirometry test for a year unless something nasty happens, but I will be having regular visits to the nurse. Hopefully my peak flow tests with her will be encouraging.
