.....I think It keeps shutting down and restarting I'm currently using a very old laptop of my sons, and not getting on very well with it I may be quiet for a bit while I try to get the hang of this and try to find my data stick which has some files stored on it, although not all will be there as I'm not very organised with backing up I also cant seem to access my kobo desktop. Blummin technology, it's a real PITA when it goes wrong

I found my back up stick and its got most of my photos and work files on it, phew I also have a lot of work docs saved in my email! SIL has a desk top he doesn't use so between that and this rather old well used lappy I should be able to sort something out without buying a new one just yet

Unplug the desktop, take the case off and check the Cpu fan , most likely clogged with dust Use a soft paint brush where ever you see dust then blow it away With luck it will work

Ive had the start up shutdown problem twice karma and both times it was a hardware issue,1 bad stick of RAM and 1 that wasnt seated properly in the connection. But then again it could be anything really such as dust,HDD..etc Good luck with it they can be a real pain in the a*se sometimes.

DS thinks it's higly amusing that Im struggling along with this terrible laptop, apparently he had to use it for a year in this condition before he got a new one. He said tonight 'see mum, I told you, using that lappy is like living in a third world country'! Ok it is bad and I'm stressed out, but nobody is starving How spoilt are our young people, lol!

Unplug the desktop, take the case off and check the Cpu fan , most likely clogged with dust Use a soft paint brush where ever you see dust then blow it away With luck it will work after removing various screws I still could not get into the tower. But using a small paintbrush, a hand held hoover thing then a big blast with a hairdryer, I seem to have got rid of a whole lot of crud from the fan and vent areas! Probably not a long term solution, so will make sure I have a back up of everything! Just feels good to get abck on my old trusty puter, thenks for the help

Karma as with all things techie, it seems every make and model is different. I had a couple of towers on which the side panel kinda slid off towards the back of the puter after taking the screws out?

I'm blaming sticky tar from ciggies In my time I've seen inside quite a few desktops that have been attacked by ciggy-smoke over a long period - not a pretty sight I wonder if it would help if you used a rubber glove or similar to improve your "grip" (I mean with the flat of your hand), I have some non-slip sheeting which helps with lots of things, from jars to changing the voltage on my Twist. Or, what about spraying WD40 into the "seams"? It must be so frustrating using your old laptop

Cheers Scylla, good tip re the rubber gloves but I have a secret weapon............ my SIL has taken it away and recons he can bodge something workable together using it and an old desktop of his. Just as well really as I just found out today that my organisation is having a major funding crisis, hours will be cut I'm getting on better with this at the moment as I'm using Google Chrome and I've borrowed a USB mouse

I couldn't work a computer without my mouse, or do without Google Chrome now.

Yes having a mouse makes a big difference. I need to give it back when DS comes home I wouldn't mind but I'm sure it was mine in the first place
