Anne, only if it is pre treated... you boil it to get rid of the wax pre treatment or manufacture process residue, the wick I refer to above is not pre treated, it is 100% pure woven cotton. No boiling required.
Trust me I have made 100's of wicks from it, and been using it for an age.

There is no need, make it with long wicks that just touch the bottom of the tank... It will wick as fast as you can vape.

I too am i vivi nova user and find i get the burnt taste vaping above 4 volts. i may look into doing my own wicks this way too , although i would find it fiddly with having one arm im sure i could get it done and the missus will help out too. Frogster do you also find the cotton wicks give a better taste, ty.

I find the cotton wicks far better for flavour, they also deliver the juice and wick better, and therefore produce more vapour, you may find you need to adjust the volts/watts of your device as a result.
But, just remember to keep them wet.... 1 dry burn and they will always taste burnt and will not wick as good.
They are also a lot better for you, as your not inhaleing lots of silica fiber...
Someone had a video once of what you inhaled when using silica wicks, it was not pretty.

Has anyone else found that the ready made 1.8 ohm wicks always taste burnt? The 2.4 and 2.8 ones are fine. ???

The 1.8 ohm wicks can taste burnt when I use them on my LT even at low volts, but I think that's because LTs aren't known for good preformance at low voltages. When I use them on a Twist they're fine.

I don't have a Twist, I might try one on the Bolt. Seems a waste to rewick an unused one.

Using VR premium, I slightly burnt the wick when I went to 3.7v. But maybe that's me turning it up too far. At 3.5v on a 2.2 ohm coil it gets good flavour, I just wanted a bit more

They're the ohms I buy Anne . . . if I can't be bothered to re-coil, taste fine to me, but everyone at Vapefest said my vapes tasted burnt to them. So it's me with the weird taste buds I suppose.

Lol Perpy. Someone should make some burnt toast flavour juice just for you! 1.8 ohms wick in the vivi's fine with the Bolt, using it now.
