Majority of smokers ignore ‘Stoptober’ - survey

An independent survery conducted by OnePoll has found that only 54% of smokers were even aware of 'Stoptober' - with less than 1 in 5 considering attempting to stop.

45% of smokers described the process of trying to give up smoking as ‘hard’ or ‘very hard’.

At the same time, more than half of the respondents said they were ‘interested’ or ‘very interested’ in using electronic cigarettes as a harm-reduction alternative to tobacco cigarettes.

The survey found that 18% of smokers have tried e-cigs and 62% still use them on a regular basis, with ‘reduction in damage to health’ being the most popular reason.

The poll questioned 1,000 British smokers and was carried out by OnePoll on behalf of E-lites.

If I had not been a member of AAEC, I wouldn't have realised that there was an anti smoking campaign on the go.

With all the NRT products on the market, stopping smoking has never been easier, the problems arise after the NRT Program has run its course and then you have to live totally without smoking.

90%+ of "stoppers" restart within 2 years. Only Vaping with E-cigs has any sort of an answer to long term cigarette cessation.

I know what you mean, I have tried every NRT product on the market, cold turkey, tablets, and nothing has worked as well for me as e-cigs. My mood is the same as it was, my appetite is the same, my health however is improving.

E-cigs work for me as I'm not just getting something to do with my hands, and the nicotine, but also the sensation of the throat hit when inhaling and the vapor when exhaling. No other quit aid or treatment does the same, and with this, I am able to reduce my nicotine use is manageable steps of 1mg or 2mg at a time, rather than having to jump 6mg in 1 go.

The simple fact is, most people want to quit smoking for health reasons, not to get off nicotine, and this is the perfect way to keep the nicotine, and remove the other chemicals that cause health problems, as well as bringing a much more fun aspect of a multitude of flavours an setups to be used.

As a smoker I always smoked more on national No Smoking day as an act of defiance - who did they think they were telling me not to smoke? I think everyone recognises "their time" to stop, and if stoptober or anything else gives them useful information all well and good. Like most here I could not have stopped without e-cigs and this forum

As I've found, I've switched of my own accord on my own timetable. Had someone told me I should have done so, I'd probably still be on the stinkies today.

I actually had a few rollies the other week (it wasn't many - maybe two?) at a friends and went back to the e-cig within a few minutes because it feels better and because of the vape (rollies - hardly any smoke. Silver bullet and LR carto - loads;D)

So as the girl who told me about AAEC told me (and wisely so)...cig addiction is so much more than just plain nicotine. It's also not just about the hands cos I do a lot of craft work so that was never really a prob for me with NRT. It's about throat hit; vape; hands ummm.....alkaloids (I think? Someone correct me) in cigs....

Because of the alkaloids whilst e-cigs work for the majority of folk I have found one guy who has to have a cig every few weeks because he can't currently get whole alkaloid e-juice

e-cigs have come a long way even in the last year I've been vaping. And they are continuing to evolve which is a good thing

Stop October like all the others will fail. NRT fails to give smokers what they need, which is a routine to go along with the NRT? We all had lighters fags meet other people in the rain and have a coffee in a smoking shelter. With my ego-t and new nova you now have NRT with something to focus on just like a hobby. You clean it mod it and chat to all the nice people on here. So they should advertise e-cigs and forums for help. They would find that alot more people would try it and quit. Just my thoughts after about 20 tries on parches etc and failed.

Thats not a bad call, e-cig kits on prescription would be cheaper to the nhs than patches or pills, which often work out more expensive to buy than tobacco.

And offering a forum, such as this, would be more available than a stop smoking clinic (my local one is only open tuesday and thursday mornings when im at work).

The way i see it, i haven't so much quit smoking, as traded it in for a healthier model

Spot on gothiclord the amount of people that I know who have got free NRT courses and have failed in the first week is amazing it must cost the NHS a bomb? My doctor is following me to see how I get on after one week on my ego-t I felt great and the cough that I had for 2 months had gone I was in hospital the week before getting chest x-rays and thankfully there wasn't anything there.

well in the few weeks I've been on e-cigs, my sinuses have cleared (they were a big problem when smoking), I can carry a basket of laundry up stairs without getting out of breath, my skin is clearer, I'm sleeping better, I'm no longer cursed with yellow fingers, and I'm not constantly hacking up gunk.

These are all things I have seen in the 1st few weeks of previous attempts to quit with methods given by the NHS, but the difference here is that I'm not irritable,I'm not constantly fidgeting and fiddling with stuff, and I'm not getting any of the side effects of normal NRT (such as damaged skin from patches)

I think thats a good result all round, and hope the NHS will look at e-cigs more closely

The only thing wrong is the fact the NHS is controled by the big farm companys and they are making mint from NRT and will do everything possible to stop ecigs from being classed as NRT ??? You would think that someone in power would say that ecigs are a good idea?

The very last thing we want is for e-cigs and anything to do with them, being classed under the NRT label.

If that happens, then E-cigs will be classed as a drug and as such will immediately be removed from the market and subjected to years of clinical trials that will cost millions of pounds and hand the tobacco industry the perfect excuse for getting e-cigs banned altogether.

We must always be very careful in the words we use to describe Vaping as an "alternative" to smoking and not as another Stop Smoking Product.

The use of e-cigs on prescription, sold in chemist shops and other such outlets is a no no, lest we fall into the trap of inadvertently getting e-cigs banned instead of promoting them.

Is anyone really surprised that ' Stoptober ' is a flop?

I'm certainly not . . . Government officialdom sits in it's detached from reality ivory tower, telling us all what to do on most things, in this instance, without providing a credible and truly effective alternative to tobacco.

Hardened smokers like myself, loved to smoke, this ' scheme ' would have got two fingers from me.

I wonder how much this fiasco is costing us all, for the sake of crossing a t and dotting an i.

I actually took part in this survey on OnePoll!! I remember it asking about ecigs towards the end. I still counted myself as a smoker as if I had said I wasnt I would have been kicked out of it!

It wasnt very long maybe 2 minutes tops, so not very indepth. The ecig questions (maybe 3 or 4 tick yes or no types) were have i used one?, do i currently use one? Do you enjoy it? Yes to all

It had a box at the end asking whether e cigs have helped me to quit and how. I said basically what has been discussed here. That they are brill and should be availible on the NHS!

Youll all be happy to know that the money I got paid for it goes into my paypal account which then usually gets spent on juice and other goodies!
