My little boy pup is now 9 months old and has the sweetest pair of testicles that I have ever seen. He isn't demonstrating any undesirable personal habits, like marking or humping or aggression. He always defers to my older neutered dog, isn't likely to ever be roaming free and looking for nooky. My vet is encouraging me to have him castrated.....(the dog. I probably wouldn't have a problem with the vet being castrated)
All my previous dogs have been 'done', mostly because I didn't used to question my vet's advice. Now I do.
I'm thinking about trying to find a vet that will sterilise rather castrate, but am keeping my tiny mind as open as possible.
Any thoughts?

Unnecessary yearly innoculations and neutering are most vets bread and butter. If your boy is doing ok with his jewels intact why put him through a general anaesthetic? They can always come off in the future if he starts exhibiting undesirable behaviour, he is still pretty young but by the time he is 18 months old you should have some idea of what his adult personality will be like. Personally I would leave his pretty plums where they are for the moment P.S Sterilising will have no effect at all on his behaviour so if he is going to be a fighter or an escape artist looking for girlies the only benefit will be that he won't make any he finds pregnant. It's all or nothing IMO Pam

Castrate the vet and have little pup sterilized, that way little accidents can be avoided, unless he is of pedigree status and breeding maybe something in the future?

Thanks Pam...
He's a raw fed boy, had his first innoculations but won't be having any more, isn't routinely wormed or de-flea'd.
I see his poop so would see worms; he doesn't scratch so doesn't seem to have fleas.
I think if his behaviour changes, it will be because I haven't taught him properly, rather than as a result of hormones.
I think I need to find another vet, preferably one who approves of feeding raw.
They are very pretty plums!

I worm my lot once a year or so unless I am mating a bitch then she is wormed before the mating and everyone is wormed at the same time as the pups. I treat for fleas if they get fleas, I don't like routinely dousing them with unnecessary chemicals. All of mine have had their puppy shots and no more after that...my vet has given up sending me yearly reminders

I've used Diatomaceous Earth with good results for fleas, once in a while... I understand it can be fed as a supplement to treat worms too.

My boy is 18 months now and my vet and some neighbours keep asking when I will get him castrated, but I see no need to at present, like yours Lynn, he isn't displaying any aggressive or sexual behaviour towards my teddy bears or chair legs I see no reason to put him through it, besides which I think my vets charge over £200 for it. I've always had neutered dogs because they have always been rescues, it has been a bit of getting used to, there are certain things that um.....happen to intact "teenage boy" dogs that don't happen to neutered ones I've had

I've used that mainly when I had chickens but dusted the dogs too, great for getting rid of ants that get in the house too.

Ellen,
Those 'things' can happen in castrated dogs too....
I'll tell the full story if anyone wants to know......
