Is this a decent laptop for the price?

Without going over £500, I'm looking to buy a laptop that will be OK for gaming. I'm not looking for a top-of-the-range gaming laptop that will run bang up to date games on high quality settings, but I would like something that will perform reasonably well on average /mid-level quality settings for most recent-ish games. I'm not really an expert on this type of thing, but I've done a bit of browsing, and I'm thinking about this one:

i5 good and it's got a discrete graphics chip which is also good..But laptops are not really suited for gaming unless you buy a gaming lappy..

It'll probably play all the games but not really suitable for intense gaming..Same one around £25.00 cheaper..

MY initial thought was as it was a netbook as oppose to net book the screen would be too small but actually 15.2 is a good size. However I agree with macca, laptops unless designed specifically aren't the best at gaming. Other than that the specs seem really good and it does seem to be a good bit of kit!

I can't recommend these any more highly www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptop-computers/ you can configure the parts you want yourself and there's plenty of options. I have the Enigma but I chose the higher end parts plus a 2nd hard drive so it was £700 ish, their CS is second to none too. If you need any help configuring just ask.

Generally I advise people not to buy computers in the weeks coming up to xmas as demand outstrips supply, and you don't see any good deals.

depending on which games you want to play you say recent to be honest Pc is way to go for any gaming,replacing a keyboard on a lappy wont be cheap unless your using an external keyboard / mouse[ i wear at least one keyboard a yr out lol] other thing is gaming will produce a lot of heat,so dont expect most laptops to last more than a few yrs

Thanks for the replies. Just to explain a bit further: the laptop will mainly be for my gf, so she's got something she can use when I'm on the PC. To be honest, there is one game she mainly plays above all others, which is The Sims 3. But she does occasionally take an interest in other games as well (one recent example I can think of is LA Noire). This why I'm thinking of a middle ground type of laptop. She's not a serious enough gamer to invest in a proper gaming laptop or a 2nd PC (besides which, we don't have room in the house for another PC!), but it would still be good for her to have a laptop that's at least capable of running a recent game if something takes her fancy.

that will run sim3 no problems,its games like Battlefield 3 that become intensive on graphic cards but think that should play that fine on med/low settings to for a decent frame rate

What he said, although personally I'd spend the extra £88 ish and get the core i7 quad 3630, and the 8gig of ram option.

And you'll have no trouble running BF3 on medium/high settings, with a really good frame rate, on a quad i7, 8gig, Gt 635M combination... Actually she'll have no trouble running any games she wants to run for the foreseeable future.

A decent cooling pad might be wise though
