Isnt the trouble with DHL that packages are always checked at customs?

DHL have their own Customs clearing facility I understand Brian, so whilst you won't have the delays . . . you could very well be guaranteed an excess Duty/Handling charge.
A bill that you may well not receive until after your parcel has been delivered.

But do they go by what the chinese value the items at Perps?
So we buy £200 value, the chinese put total cost at £30, so we only pay the excess of £15?

I haven't looked into them Amy, as I've never had the need with using EMS with you in the past, there's some guidance here: www.dhl.co.uk/en/express/shipping/customs_support/duties_taxes.htmlDuties and Taxes This is a resource for people who are using DHL Express for the first time, or who have received a delivery from DHL. We hope you find it useful. You don't have to be a business person to be an exporter or an importer. As Internet shopping becomes more popular, what is often not understood is that as soon as you hit the return key to purchase a product from another country, then effectively you become an importer and become liable for duty and VAT payments.
Customs Advice for Internet Shoppers
What goods are subject to duty & VAT? All goods imported into the UK from outside the EU must be declared to HM Revenue & Customs and in most cases, are subject to Customs duty & VAT. This includes goods bought over the Internet.
It's not always about the purchasing! If someone sends you a gift from abroad that is over £40 in value, you will also be obliged to pay the duty and VAT unless the person who sent it has agreed to pay it themselves. Likewise, if you are the person sending you need to remember that if you don't take the time to include the proper invoices then your shipment could be held in customs or the person you are sending to may be charged too much duty and VAT.
The bottom line is: If you are sending goods out of the European Union (EU) you will need to prepare a Prepare aCustoms Invoice and if you are receiving a shipment you need to know that there could be duties on top that may be billed after the shipment has been delivered.

Good info there, Perps.
It unfortunately makes buying from HC potentially a lot more expensive, and while they have stock that I'd like and I was more than happy with the goods, the prices and the excellent service I received on my first and only order, I think I'll have to look closer to home for these things as the price difference after DHL postage and any duty/VAT will be negligible.
A great pity, as their prices with slow-boat shipping are fantastic.

Indeed Moon . . . and unfortunately DHL's excess duty charges are generally higher than what you'd pay throught the EMS/Parcel Force system.
It's the price to be paid, fast tracking the Customs process . . .

It's the price to be paid, fast tracking the Customs process . . . It's not like I'm in a rush for it either. My first order I went a bit mad as I had almost no vaping gear, and with stuff for my mum and sister it came to over the $250 threshold for free shipping, although before I got my mum and sis involved I was going to pay the extra as I wanted it immediately. If slow-boat was available I'd only be buying about £40 worth of top-ups and stuff I quite fancy the look of, so not what I'd deem necessities and would have been happy to wait, but it's now twice the postage cost of and then there's duty on top. A right bummer.
