Wick alternative

Not sure if there is already a thread on this but over the last few days I have been tinkering. I've wound my first mesh wick and coil for a mini-DID and then decided to have a go at a Vivi Nova.

Lacking any kind of silica wick and having read some threads on safety concerns I looked for what was in the cupboard. So I found some muslin or cheesecloth and wound a small amount around a 1.9 coil. Just been vaping it for 10 mins. Wicks really well, no dry hits yet, flavour is great. And a cheap alternative material

Interesting ... vapour is ok but not as good as silica ... the tank seems to be fogging quite a bit ... I might have an airflow problem

do u use it without the bung over the coils?
maybe thats causing the vapor to stay in the tank

Aargh! What a tool I am ! I left it off to check if the coil/wick was burning ...fixed ! Thanks vapee !

Good emergency fix tho.

There's a thread on UKV showing step by step how to wick using cotton pads & another poster adapted it using cotton balls.

Cotton and cotton wool work well, jut don't let them
get dry, it tastes foul when burnt.

Medical guaze is another wick alternative that's supposed to be quite good, haven't tried it yet myself, though I did buy some.

I've been bunging a sliver of cotton ball over the wick/coil of my vivi novas and it's brilliant. I have tons of cotton balls, probably a lifetime's supply for this purpose. Might give wicking with just the cotton a go next time. If it works well I'll never have to buy wick again.

Dizzi: thats a wick on a mini nova, done with just a cotton ball, just had a full tank through it and about to refill. It works great

the cheesecloth wick looks pretty good too.

a cotton ball ?? what about cotton wool, I have loads of that....

I guess cotton wool would be fine. The cotton balls I have are just balls of cotton wool really. I just break a small amount off, twist it a bit to tighten and reduce its size, then wrap a coil. Best to make sure the cotton wool hasn't been treated/scented or anything like that. Some people boil some types of cotton to make sure, but I didn't with this.

Cotton pads cut into 3 mm strips and twisted are hard to beat ,I'd say even better than silica

I've got some of the asda cotton pads that some people use, I'm thinking of giving them a go.

Although I went to clean that setup I showed above to change flavours and its really hard to get the wick clean. Its totally gunked up around the coil, compared to how easy it is to clean a silica Vivi its a bit annoying. Don't necessarily want to change the wick coil every time I change flavours.
