I don't understand how batteries can explode in the first place- aren't they supposed to be 'protected' and therefore safe???

Just a quick thought, I had a similar thing happen to a battery when I put it on charge. The thing smoked and stunk to high heaven, it even blew the charger up.
I found that I'd still got some liquid on the inner side of the battery so totally my fault.
As for the 'slim jym' one of mine did the same, I found that although the button was still looking as though it was out, it had gone futher in that it should have and was making the battery stay live. I've resolved this by sticking a pin into the rubber and pulling it out a bit.
