I second what Gary said about a mix that has some other flavours & not just baccy. It's amazing how some, including me, never bother with baccy taste after trying what else is about.
I hope he gets on well with his kit & it helps him to quit.

Thanks Jess.....I did suggest other flavours to him and he may get more adventurous butbatm he just wants tobacco! I do have another question though.....what's the difference between a clearomiser and a cartomiser? I see the kit comes with both.....do you put e liquid in both? Apologies if this is a silly question

Hi Leslie, i use the riva 1100 l smoked for 41 yrs and 40 a day and it took me a while to actually smoke smoking altogether but have not had a real ciggy for 4 wks and 2 days so it does work but don't expect it to work over night personally l found that by doing both but using the e cig more often through the day even when your not gasping for a cig then you suddenly realise you are using that more than you are using the real thing and that is when you will get to the point that you are about ready to quit the real ones for the e cig but some people won't agree with me but its just so you are not expecting a miracle over night as doubt it would happen like that patience and trial and error is the answer to this, the biggest plus is the saving on the finances !! l have saved nearly £300 in one month so far and my daughter is doing the same but is at the sticky stage of not being able to find the right juice to replace the real thing , l found the 24 usa mix the one for me in mornings but love the 18 cotton candy and the18 fruit mix in the daytime so you can see how it varies from person to person, good luck and keep us posted to the ups and downs of how he gets on

Lesley, some folks prefer using clearomisers to deliver the e-liquid & other prefer cartomisers. That's why Vape escape includes both in the Riva kit And please don't ever feel you need to apologise for asking questions

Thanks Chrissie......cartridge e-cigs are not good news then? I really haven't a clue but it's the first time in 6 years he's showed any interest so I want to help! He smokes golden virginia and so that taste is the most important bit for him Hmmm. Golden Virginia is a tough taste to find in e-cigs. Although it's not the strongest tobacco by a long shot, it has lots of delicious TAR in it. . i.m.o. the best e-cig tobacco juices are more close in taste to the classic ready-made brands..... As for cartridges...... it's complicated...... but there are a few methods of storing then delivering the liquid (e-liquid/juice) to the atomiser that vapourises the juice. My personal opinion is that the classic atomiser and cartridge set up is only really any use to someone that really likes the taste. They are a faff and hold less e-liquid than a clearomiser. I don't expect many new vapers would choose this option t.b.h. taking pros and cons of the various systems into consideration.

PS - if you've ordered a Riva kit, you can choose between the two "types" in that kit.
I find the difference between the two most noticeable. Let's hope one of them works well and you find some good juice.

Thanks again for all the advice and links! Apparently the kit is now dispatched so hopefully he can have a play this weekend. Sounds like the clearomisor will be a good start....he doesn't 'do' faffing!

lesley - with having both clearo and carto in the same kit is a distinct advantage..... especially as when you fill the cartos it's best to let them stand for a bit before using them, so he can dive in with the clearo (just fill'n'vape) whilst filling and standing the cartos. Clearos v cartos is a personal choice, but if I can offer an opinion..... in the 3 months I've been vaping, both have advantages - the clearos are good when at home/in the office (i.e. pretty static, not travelling around much) but a good carto is brill for when you're out & about (e.g. driving, walking round town, night out, etc. as they won't leak on you even if tipped upside down. Also, some juices taste better in one or the other. I still use a Boge carto on a skycig battery when driving (small, doesnt get in the way so much, can do the lip-dangle if you need to do a 3-point turn etc. ) ... just take the time to get used to filling cartos properly

Ok we have it....not a bad start but he hates the clearo! Also not impressed with first e liquid but you all warned me that would be trial and error! Anyway I need more cartos so advice on best place to go would be gratefully received :-) Does anywhere do free p & p? A link to cartos that would fit the riva would be great....there seem to be so many options available and my kit came with absolutely no instructions and plain packaging on the cartos that were included! Thanks again

Thanks again If you have the Riva then you can go to Vapescape who do 10& off orders and over £40 free p&p or i have just used called Vape Eazy and they are selling for £2.00 ea but £1.99 p&p but that's cheap, also there is Royal Vapour that are doing Sample Packs for FREE i have just got mine and there are 11 different flavours and one of them will fill the clearomiser. a tip with the clearomiser's only fill them a third of the way with a new flavour and that way if you don't like it it's easier to empty it and if you buy the refillable ones that are on vapescape you will find it a lot easier as you can take them apart and clean them so there is no taste of the last flavour you had, one more thing try the usa 24mg , that is the one l use first thing for the hit factor and then go onto gentler ones through the day thats why l have refillable ones so i can have a few on the go at any one time. hope this was of some use and good luck, just remember he would be better doing both to begin with keep his ciggys and use the e cig that is how a lot of us do it and it might take a few weeks or so for him to finally decide he prefers the e cig that is what l did and l smoked for 41 yrs 40 a day, but i am now classed as a non smoker by the nhs.

I can strongly recommend HS Storm e liquid, the best of the tobacco bunch I've tried so far, and as this is all still new to me I hope it's relevant to him if that makes any sense, I got mine from vape escape and its by far the best for me. I use vivi nova rebuildable clearomizers. Why does he not get on with the clearomizers? I love mine, so little faff to clean and fill up, I get the best taste between a half and two thirds full. Hope that helps
Chris.

Thanks again for all the replies! Just a quick update.......things are going well and probably replaced about 33% of cigs so far but looking to up that now he's found an e-liquid he's happy with! I think we'd gone too strong to start with - I'd ordered tasters in medium but they were all making him dry and making the cough worse! Tried adding menthol which worked to an extent but then just ordered Gold leaf in low strength and that seems to hit the spot for him. He's also put that in the clearo and that works for him too so I think the problem with that was just the wrong e-liquid
