Jules did you get the seller to put on paperwork it was a gift? you are allowed up to $25 tax free if its a gift, other than that you are subject to either vat or import duties depending on value and nature of package(this is where its complicated )

I had the same on my last Ecigexpress order if it's any consolation to you Karl, £14.67 I had to pay. If it's over $19 ( I think ) declared value then you're liable for Customs, though Brian was pursing a £72+ customs charge we got hit with on a Capella Group Buy as flavourings are supposed to be exempt? Both orders before Christmas, November time . . . .

Frogster would be the one to ask about getting capella through customs-his just had a artic lorry load delivered. lol i know Frogster is having a few days off but send him a pm, he may help you get it refunded.

I think Brian put a claim in Sadie . . . but knowing HMRC when it comes to refunds, it could be a long wait, if ever.

I am also in the process of claiming it back..... (the £400.00+ was just a shipping cost).
They turned up at my door with my boxes and I was told customs decided to chance their arm and put their hand in my pocket....
I had to pay £684 Customs charge.... before they would deliver the goods - no warning, pay or they take the goods back! I knew everyone wanted the stuff quick, so I paid up.
I called the UPS agent and now have a special form to fill in as an importer, and have been told they will re evaluate the shipment and they will then (I hope) refund me.
Food Flavourings are exempt under HMRC Reference: Notice 701/14 (October 2011) section 3.2 where it states Flavourings and flavour enhancers are Zero Rated.
Time will tell!

Dear lord Frog . . . that's a bill and a half, when you aren't expecting it! Thank you for biting the bullet, for our benefit . . . and I sincerely hope you get re-imbursed. It's a great pity HMRC don't appear to read their own rules. >

I would imagine that £8.00 of that is the RM handling charge for paying the VAT on your behalf. Going to be a headache, nodoubt, to get your money back. > Some info for you: www.nibusinessinfo.co.uk/content/paying-outstanding-charges-goods-imported-post-and-royal-mail-handling-fees

Karl and Froggys examples are two different things, you`ll still have to pay import VAT on zero-rated goods when entering the EU, even though you should not charge VAT on those goods when reselling, unless they are forwarded to another EU country, in which case you can claim relief. If it is VAT and not customs charges: differences in your accounts will be settled or demanded by HMRC at the end of the financial year..I would imagine your input VAT is alot higher than output VAT so you wont be out of pocket in either case Customs charges are a different kettle of fish unless you are a charity or non profit organisation.

It's not the duty I object to Comfrey, it's RM/Parcel Farce's ridiculous handling charge, that takes the pickle.

Over the last few years anything I've bought from the US has been hit with duty, VAT, and handling charges. I now don't buy anything over £15.00 from there. Strange that I've bought loads of stuff from China, mostly for an other intrest, a lot of it costing £100-300 range and never paid anything, it just sails through!
