I have got a provisional date for a meeting with my MP for next week and am at present gathering some facts and figures. Does any one know where I can lay my hands on some figures on how many people are vaping throughout the UK and Europe? At the moment all I can find is hearsay and maybe that's all there is but if anyone can point me towards a useful link it would be appreciated

Hifi mentioned the figures not long ago, maybe send him a pm asking if he could give you them. Well done on getting a meeting.

Thanks guys, that's excellent, I think I will e mail ASH and see how these figures were estimated. I don't want to to go to this meet "half cocked" it comes from years of negotiating with management as a shop steward

The EU report itself has figures in Annex 2 of the impact assessment (you can find the report via ec.europa.eu/health/tobacco/products/revision/index_en.htm page 17 if you want to look), They say "The Electronic Cigarette Industry Trade Association (ECITA) estimates that they represent 60-70% of the volumes sold on the UK market and reports that the market is growing 20-30% monthly. ECCA UK estimates that in 2012 there will be 750,000 electronic cigarette users. Red Kiwi estimates the figure for Germany to be 1.2 million for the year 2011" Personally I suspect the figures for the UK and Germany actually include vapers in EU countries where ecigs are banned. But even so they are high enough for us to expect see a reduction in the number of smokers (a better researched figure). I can't find figure for the UK for 2011 (don't know why, supposed to be out in August 2012) but the Scotland figure was down by 2% compared to 2010 although normal year-on-year reduction is 0.5%. If we can convince people that this extra reduction is because of ecigs then we should win this battle if we can delay a decision long enough for the 2012 figures to come in.

Thanks guys, it would be interesting to see if that 0.5% year on year reduction has increased since the introduction of e cigs, I'm sure it will impact on the figures dramatically in the future, although big Pharma will be scrambling for the glory on that one

Do shout if you want case studies of long time smokers and quit failures.
