Windows 8

My brother has upgraded two computers to Windows 8,one with a touch screen one without,I may do the same as its a good deal before the end of January to upgrade from Vista or 7.

Just wondered if anyone else has and wants to share their findings

I get what izan is saying however I can also confirm that Windows 8 is a pretty darn stable OS considering its early stages.

It IS quicker. I have Win8 installed on a 120gb SSD (Solid state Drive) in a laptop with a intel i5 chip with 4GB ram. Push the power button count to 4 and you are fully in Windows 8 with a single click and a second later browser open and restores 10+ open tabs.

Photoshop takes about 3 or 4 seconds to fully load and 3D rendering is a doddle. It is different, but to all the hardcore IT guys out there. YOU CAN make it look identical to what we know and love start button etc.

Yes on my brothers second system without touch screen he has added a desktop that's the same as we all know,he did mention something about not being able to play DVD,s via the drive due to some sort of licensing,I will get more info on that

Understand your feelings Izan but its 25 quid to upgrade atm that's not a lot of money

Personally I think most of Microsoft OS's after ME have been pretty stable, XP,Vista,Win 7 win 8 - I have never really had many problems with any of them. I know a lot of people rave on about how bad vista was but many of the issues I encountered were more related to faulty vendor written drivers than the OS itself. For £25 upgrade for the average home user it’s a steal, I will be holding off deploying it in a business environment for a while though and sticking with Win 7.

I played with the RC when it was released. Meh...
On a tablet/ touchscreen/ handheld.. it is intuitive, in an apple sort of way.
I'm not sold on the laptop/desktop experience.

Totally agree Izan, Windows 8 is designed for touch screen devices and is not desktop friendly in my view and it is so difficult to find certain settings programs if you are used to an earlier version. It is stable and although it is quick to install Micrsoft cheats by providing a basic install which flies through the installation process but then searches for a huge service pack in windows updates upon 1st use.

Saying that I have a tablet with windows 7 on and I think Win 8 would be perfect.

Good to know yours and everyones thoughts,I shall be watching broths progress and seeing if its worth it for me,he needs to be up with all the latest techy stuff as he is a hardware engineer,his boss bought him the touch screen and os,he put it on his second machine out of choice,it took me years to move from XP to 7 and that was mainly because I enjoy gaming,though tend not to have the time for it some much these days

I'll also second what others have said, WIn8 blows 7 out of the water speed wise.
It really is a very quick OS!

I installed a Windows 7 start menu and now have the best of both worlds and I only use Win8 "Modern UI" when I want to.
Most of the time I'm in Windows 8 much improved desktop.

I believe you cant use Windows Media Player with Windows 8 then again I have heard if its upgrade to 8 Pro you can.
Has anyone heard of either i have considered upgrading to 8 pro, from windows 7 if I can still use media player.

Hold on for a while is the best advice i can give you , Win 9 is under development atm and will be addressing certain issues within the Win 8 O/S, I cannot say much more than that at present.

I'm happy to be proven wrong. But I think that's duff info. WMP is i'm pretty sure in all the releases. I think the confusion is with Windows Media Centre, which isn't available but is now a paid upgrade but only available in W8 Pro
