When I lived in South Africa, it was your local Chemist that sold guns (??) You went in and on one side of the shop there was medicines to make you better and the other side was for "medicines" to kill people with.
You didn't need a licence to buy a gun. All you needed was a licence to buy ammunition.
You went to your local police office and get a licence, then went to the chemist and bought a gun of your choosing and ammo for it. Just like getting a prescription really.
Oh by the by, South Africa has one of the highest murder rates anywhere in the world. I wonder why.

My wife is from SA, and like she says. YES its bad with guns, however you have NO choice but to have one.
you WILL have your head blown off for a mobile phone, sometimes without even being told first. you WILL have your hand chopped off to take a nice watch or ring or both (it happens allot and we know someone who unfortunatly had this done to them)
So you wounder WHY they arm themselves in SA?.... a no brainer really. However Americans do not need all thease guns. That is for sure.

My wife and her family moved here just over 7 years ago now, similar reasons such as yourself. Since Jacob Zuma came into power and spouted things you are most likely aware of it was a VERY dangerous place for any white south African. Every time anything with Africa comes on TV etc I can see that glimmer in my wife’s eyes, she misses it so badly. The worst part of it all is we both work in professions that are in need over there and could move out to make a new start but it is just too crazy, especially around the major city’s. They were lucky enough to spend their last few years down in zinkwazi beach, but even there at a place considered "nice to live" bad BAD things started happening and crime (corruption) took over. They even had a burglar who was caught out by their guard dogs; he hopped over the fence lost a shoe. They called the cops and half hour later two police turned up..... One (low ranking/training cop) missing the identical shoe that the "burglar" lost. Let’s hope things change as one day I would love to call it home. I can’t stand this country anymore I am sick to death of it.

I lost a job in South Africa because they changed me from Day Shift to Nightshift but all the guys on the nightshift were issued with guns and I refused to carry one, so I got dimissed. The irony was that when I returned to the UK and within 3 years I was in a job where I was carrying a gun.
