Menthol crystals

Evening all!

Can someone please share with me the dark art of dissolving menthol crystals? I tried mine in some VG, and they dissolved fine when I left the bottle somewhere warm, but as soon as it cooled the menthol solidified in a layer at the top of the liquid.

How can I dissolve them so they stay in suspension? Should I just use water?

Plain PG is the best thing . . . or Vodka Sarah.

VG is ok, but the crystals need heat to dissolve in it, plus you do run the risk of them re-crystallizing as you've found.

Thanks Perps. Will give vodka a try, if I can stop myself drinking it!

What about ratios? Roughly how much of the 5g tub to how many ml vodka?

You'll need to crush them them Sarah if you use Vodka, as they don't dissolve quite so readily in that, as they do in PG.

I'd say half fill a 10ml bottle with crushed crystals, then top up with Vodka or PG . . . they are extremely potent, so be careful handling them and then maybe rubbing your eyes.

Once dissolved, see if that strength is to your tastes, if not you can always add more.

Sit your current crystallized bottle in a bowl with boiled water from a kettle.

Keep shaking it periodically until fully liquid again.

Decant into a larger bottle and double the volume with PG.

This won't crystalize any further.

This happened to me when I mixed my 1st concentrate.

Ah, geni-arse!! Thanks Manic, I was wondering what to do with the other bottle. i used a 30ml dripper bottle and the neck's too narrow to get the big disc of solidified menthol out!

Dissolved some more earlier in PG (in a glass bottle with a wide neck!) and it worked a treat, so once I've got the old lot out of the bottle I'll add it to this and top up with some more PG.
