OK Guys, here's how you cut down on "funky" tasting wicks, firstly you need to wash your hands or use gloves when handling wick. The oils on your skin/hand cream/fat from a kebab will get on the wick and taint it. Secondly after cutting it to the required length and before I wind the coil I always use a blowtorch to heat it up as hot as I can get it while using small pliers or tweezers to hold it. This will burn off any residue on the wicks. You could of course wash the wick, people used to recommend boiling it in clean water, I prefer my method. Keep it clean! sorry if I misread this but do you mean Blowtorch the kanthal wire or the actual Silica Wick ?

im having the same issue it taints the most of my juice with a flavour i cant quite put my finger on mainly noticable in weaker flavour juices and make my hs menthol just nasty (altho i think the recipe has changed in that over time it never has tasted the same ) I quite agree with you on that score... 1st bottle of HS sensation I had was amazing, after that very mediocre

Gum pain from Silica wick not good After you boil the wick should it unwrap. i boiled my 1.5mm wick and it looks a mess now. Also i decided to rewick my friends rebuildable on lunch, i was sat in the car with an envelope on my knee guess what did it first time, beacuse i took my time and checked the coils.

My understanding is that for silica wick you can either: a)torch it as Des suggests b)boil it for 10 mins as Blakey suggests c)boil it in milk as in Perpy's suggestion If you are getting a funky taste any of these can work.
With wire, flaming it with a lighter can help, especially with Kanthal wire, as it makes it less springy and easier to use - especially with thicker wire. It also has an annealing effect and gets rid of any impurities there may be in the wire.
