Not to sure how I am going to explain this but I give it a try.
My PC has been playing up since last night. Basically the screen freezes and I have to force a shut down to restart the PC, anyway on the restart the power lights up on the key pad but the monitor remains a black screen like it was off. I then force the shut down again until I am blue in the face, I would leave it for a while and try again. 3/4 hours maybe and if no such luck would wait even longer. I am on the PC now after a 7 hour absence but lucky for me I been using the tablet to get online but I would prefer using the laptop. Does anyone know why I am having this problem.
Regards Computer dummy

It sounds like your ram is failing mate, this is what happens with a ram failure. You can buy new ram quite cheaply from www.mrmemory.comIf you can get into the bios, check PC health screen and make sure your cpu isnt heating up too much and forcing your computer to constantly shut down. if it is, it could be due to a cpu fan failure. Tbh, I wouid need more info to work out the issue.

It could be overheating due to fluff and dust getting drawn in by the fan to the point where the finned heatsink just cant dissipate the heat anymore as it must. I have seen it and fixed that fault a few times.

Dont use the aerosol air blower things, they can cause problems as well with the expellant (is that a word) lol.

Till you get a new memory card, you could open the memory compartment and see how many memory cards are in there. If there 2, pull one out and try to boot the lappie. If no success swap the memory cards and boot again. If you are able to boot from time to time the cause is a faulty memory card indeed.

After my last post my pc went all blue again and when I press the turn off button it wouldn't turn off. so I had to take the battery pack off the bottom of the keypad. first time I've done that. The good news when reconnecting the battery the PC started up again. I will strip it down tomorrow to clean it out, can't see how much crap got in there as the house is somewhat tidy.
Cheers Jon for your insight, I have a good luck tomorrow

No probs, identify the faulty memory card, buy an identical or bigger capacity new one (beware of different types of memory sticks), fix it yourself. No need to pay £20-£30+ the price of memory for loosening of one screw. GL

Stamina where abouts are you based? Adding new ram can be quite scary if you're not a 'computer person' just wondering if you live near any of us who could do that for you and have a look to see if there are further issues. If you would like me to have a look and you live anywhere near I'd be happy to, or you could courier it to me. I'm not an expert but I know quite a bit so may be able to help. I would not charge but would ask for you to pay postage to me and back to you and also pay the cost of anything that may be needed (such as extra memory) bear in mind though I make no promises. I do also know a computer 'geek' hho I could ask for advice but would need to have the computer in front of me.
The other thing I could do if you like is remote access (you'd have to download a program) but if it is memory issues which I strongly suspect or other hardware issues I would not be able to sort them by remote access.

I been using the tablet to get online but I would prefer using the laptop. Does anyone know why I am having this problem Gordy I think he's talking about a laptop so alot of your checks won't be possible. I know he keeps referring to it as a pc but the last line of his first post made me think it was a laptop -apologies if I'm wrong!

download this checks temps in lappy, bad news depending on lappy it can be a pain, while everyone says blow it another problem is also dust gets embeded on cooling fan blades which can only be removed manually,as for clean house i have same problem its vacumed every day,but yup dust is still dust and gets sucked in lol if you have an acer some of these are extremely lucky on the Acer 6390g theres an access panel to fan and heat sink, righ thand rear corner[you can check heatsink through the vent port see if its clogged] on a lot of lappys though its a case of removing the keypad as its under there, others its under the motherboard...... while some are saying its maybe the ram i am betting this is a Hardrive fail, now thats easy to check , remove the hard drive and then start laptop if it posts ie shows all its bios stuff being loaded [do it a few times to check ] if this does it ok then betting hd is failing ,common on laptops, replace both in our laptops, with heat besides go slow graphics usually start to distort common sign of overheating www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor-pro/versions-history.html
