Im a technician in a Mercedes main dealer and not all of us are thieves, my advice would be to use a tyre firm like kwikfit etc for tyres as dealers overcharge for them, easy bits like brakes/timing belts etc use independants but for diagnostics I would use a main dealer as quite often what people don't realise is alot of independants who are specialists in Mercedes will take their customers vehicle to a main dealer for the diagnosis to be done then carry out the work themselves then charge thiers customer for it and sometimes it works out as expensive or more. It is a minefield out there with dodgy garages but there are some good ones. Stick with a good trusted mobile mechanic or independant for everything apart from diagnostics.

I've had it done now OK. I run up to 3 cars (sometimes) on a budget. I always find cheap ways to keep them on the road and rarely use anything other than small independent garages. However, although it's costly, sometimes spending the extra can be seen as a long-term investment. I had one of my timing belts done for not much and it took a visit to a specialist to adjust it. Some cars are very picky about this. Not like the old days with a few tippex marks......
