It'll probably be like the PS3, over hyped and under achieving. Although at least they've got rid of the Cell CPU. For me I have a decent gaming PC and the PS3 still plays Blurays (I don't play games on it) so there's no reason for me to buy a PS4 unless there are some good exclusives. If the PS4 can actually handle 60fps with 1080p without dropping frames, 8x AA and DX11 I might be interested, if not then meh. On the plus side once the consoles have decent power developers will be able to make cutting edge games without having to pander to the crap hardware of the current gen consoles and they'll be able to port them straight to PC without giving them to 3rd party companies to make shoddy PC ports. The current crop of consoles have dragged innovation and graphics down the toilet for the past few years. Let's hope it improves now

Oh and to continue my whining A share button and more online capabilities is exactly what I need with my 1mb "broadband" where I couldn't use the multiplayer capabilities of the PS3, even if I wanted to.

As an owner of a gaming PC and both an Xbox and PS3 ( who says I'm getting old) I see lots of differences between all three platforms, I've been a die hard fan of Gaming pc's since the beginning, and owned a pc since 1991.
I find its horses for courses, if you want the cutting edge and the ability to gain an extra 1-2 fps every time intel or AMD feel like squeezing another £550 out of the more 'serious' gamer even though realistically we know we can't tell the difference between 100 and 120 fps and then the same again from the big video card manufacturers, and lets not forget the ram makers or the power supply guys, then the case makers and the people who make the water cooling systems, fans with cute blue lights or matching coloured Sata cables and finally the display people want a reasonable chunk from you if you decide you'd like anything more than 27" of screen real estate. All to effectively play the same kinds of game available on a console and a gigantic 60 inch HDTV.
Gaming pc's have their advantages, but the reason to spend so much nowadays is getting smaller ( although you'll never beat the option of a mouse in BF3), and you don't mind paying a premium rate for a decent dpi mouse. Sadly after twenty years I see the death knell of serious gaming rigs coming and isn't that far away, what with the advent of tablets, smartphones and the increasingly popular touch pc's. it's a sad time for gaming enthusiasts on the PC front and no doubt ill be there to the bitter end.
The argument for consoles is simple, if you want plug and play gaming with portability then that's what they provide, but they are getting extremely good at what they do, social, media (blu ray), streaming etc. at a much more affordable price.
It's not my intention to open a fan boy debate a'la apple/ android nor am I opening debates about best fps or gaming titles, i consider myself fortunate to have enjoyed the best of both worlds. There is a market for all types of gamer without going into nonsensical arguments, I'm just pointing out as I did at the beginning of this post....
....Horses for courses.

PC man myself, love games like The Witcher, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Skyrim, Dragon Age, just prefer games that have some kinda story not just shoot....look over there...shoot....etc etc....and consoles cannot deliver MMORPG like GW2/WoW. And most of all i wouldn't get a Playstation anyway, way prefer Xbox and it's live connection, problem being i now have to buy 3 of the new Xbox's when it comes out, it's one of the downfalls of having kids ...but they are worth every penny (the kids that is) Thank god i don't have to buy my forth kid one, his only 7 weeks old

I have most of the consoles and a reasonable gaming rig and I've been a pc fanatic since the Doom days and I agree, it's sad to see the state of the industry now. Social games and mobile devices are killing the past time I love. But such is the way of progress, at the end of the day if you can get a reasonable gaming experience on a console for £400 that it takes a grand or more PC to beat then a lot will take the cheapest route. And businesses will follow the money so start dropping support for the more expensive devices and go where the money is.

I played since launch on a Rogue for years and then went onto a Healing Shaman and then back to Rogue, then stopped when they brought a silly panda out

I was a Wow gamer too Played from release till Cataclysm and then got bored of the grind. The other problem I have with consoles is that I like most people with a family only have one large TV in the house. The Mrs would never stand for me hogging the TV for 16 hours a day, then add to the fact on my PC I can work from home, surf the net, watch movies, play games, do excel spreadsheets and word documents, look at cat videos on youtube, share stuff with facebook, edit videos, write music and surf forums all at the same time.. well kind of anyway. I don't need a console to do one of two of those things worse than I can already do them. My 360 barely gets used unless we have friends round for Kinect sports and even that's boring now, my PS3 streams movies form the PC onto the TV or plays blurays, my phone can be used for photos and witty status updates if I feel extrovert and I still have the option to use a laptop and an iPad if I feel the urge. For everything else I have my PC, that does all and does it well. But it did cost more than a console I will admit
