As an owner of a gaming PC and both an Xbox and PS3 ( who says I'm getting old) I see lots of differences between all three platforms, I've been a die hard fan of Gaming pc's since the beginning, and owned a pc since 1991.
I find its horses for courses, if you want the cutting edge and the ability to gain an extra 1-2 fps every time intel or AMD feel like squeezing another £550 out of the more 'serious' gamer even though realistically we know we can't tell the difference between 100 and 120 fps and then the same again from the big video card manufacturers, and lets not forget the ram makers or the power supply guys, then the case makers and the people who make the water cooling systems, fans with cute blue lights or matching coloured Sata cables and finally the display people want a reasonable chunk from you if you decide you'd like anything more than 27" of screen real estate. All to effectively play the same kinds of game available on a console and a gigantic 60 inch HDTV.
Gaming pc's have their advantages, but the reason to spend so much nowadays is getting smaller ( although you'll never beat the option of a mouse in BF3), and you don't mind paying a premium rate for a decent dpi mouse. Sadly after twenty years I see the death knell of serious gaming rigs coming and isn't that far away, what with the advent of tablets, smartphones and the increasingly popular touch pc's. it's a sad time for gaming enthusiasts on the PC front and no doubt ill be there to the bitter end.
The argument for consoles is simple, if you want plug and play gaming with portability then that's what they provide, but they are getting extremely good at what they do, social, media (blu ray), streaming etc. at a much more affordable price.
It's not my intention to open a fan boy debate a'la apple/ android nor am I opening debates about best fps or gaming titles, i consider myself fortunate to have enjoyed the best of both worlds. There is a market for all types of gamer without going into nonsensical arguments, I'm just pointing out as I did at the beginning of this post....
....Horses for courses.
Skowdddy, demise of the pc not going to happen, except it will not be as we know it, like the P$/Xbox720,you are going to find later on in years ,they are going to be an add on as a central hub in house building basic its going to be in a cupboard and every platform will run off of it and then later on it will run from a central unit in towns-log in play what you want as a subscriber,by then pc/xbox/ps will all be gone......
But for now the PC will always be around,as for the PS4/Xbox 720 all i can see from what i heard is a uprated cpu, better graphics and a few new ports but then again usb fits all and piced around £350 mark-- for that i can still build a better game pc.......what is a wonder is Sony PS3 had a problem with a lot of gaming coders who told them to get stuffed and they would no longer re code games unless Sony agreed to give them a better slice of the pie, hence if you noticed there has not been a lot of new titles for the PS3 over past 3 yrs
