I have always liked being a bit techy, but at the same time some things just don't bother me that much and the case in hand is mobile phones, they ring you answer and talk to who ever, you swap the odd text when necessary,it may be that I am in a position where I have two decent computers and enjoy the internet at home and work on a couple of decent PC's,despite that I don't really get it and here is why.
I loved my Motorola pay as you go V3i it did those things as above plus it blue-toothed to my car stereo,so nice and safe hands free, good for someone that organizes car meets,I could also turn of voice-mail,hate that if I don't answer I either don't want to or I will get back to you.
Now the bad,a while back I spilled milk on the V3i and now it works a bit crap (techy term) so I decided I would take advantage of a £7.50 a month contract on a Samsung Galaxy Ace,yes its nice to have internet on a screen I can just about see and maybe I am doing things wrong or missing some settings, but I cant turn voice-mail off and where my V3i answered in my car after x amount of rings now there is a swipe screen and when I first used it I wondered why it wasn't answering, which just put me in un safe car mode again.
Every month I have nearly a thousand unused texts and countless calls and internet time, its wasted on me and its not as good as my older phone,I cant be the only one that thinks this as you can still pay a bob or two on the much older and classic Motorola, know what I'm getting next

Alan buy an unlocked Moto on ebay and stick your SIM in it. Sell the Galaxy and you'll have the phone you want on a great monthly deal and a profit on the whole transaction as the Galaxy will go for a lot more than you pay for the moto

£7.50 a month!!!!
I doubt if I use that in a year with my pay as you go!
I also have a pay as you go dongle for the laptop so that we get emails when we are away in the folding camper and £7.50 is two years worth of emails.

Its a good Idea I might well buy another V3i,the old one works, but can take half a century to turn on and can be hard to charge now, once its going its ok though, may swap the card into it as its unlocked and see if I am happier

Lol and that's about as cheap as it gets for a contract, god knows apart from business people why some pay what they do,to walk into the road or other people because they are not concentrating and reading facebook or whatever, driving while sending texts or talking to someone they just spent all day with,I just don't actually get the phone culture at all.

Yes, we seem to have a new breed of children here in our village. They look the same and dress the same, but they all have a mobile phone growing out of one ear.

I'm so with you here Alan . . . got a Samsung Galaxy mobile on my last upgrade. I can barely use the thing, my fingers are too big firstly. A dibber thingy hasn't helped a great deal. Making a phone call or sending a text is a major operation for me and requires considerable forward planning. I had to get Scott to show me how to answer a call, at the last Vapefest. (zzz) However, I do know how to set up a wifi hotspot with it which is useful for my tablet when I'm out & about. Which I'm not.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note, which is about the size of a multi-plex cinema screen. I use it almost as much as I use my lappy. Whenever I am somewhere that I have to wait around like the dentist etc. I am able to log onto my favourite web sites ;)and amuse myself. For texting, I have an app. called "swype" which allows you to just slide your fingers across the screen rather than individual key presses. I can send and receive Emails and calls.Like Perps, I can tether my phone to a lappy if I want, for an even bigger screen. I dont do facepaint or paintbook or whatever it is called. I dont look the same or dress the same as other young 50 somethings (wont be in that group for much longer ) Love it and would be lost without it. It is one of those things that I check I have when leaving the house...Mod,spare battery,Keys, wallet, glasses, mobile. In fact it takes me half an hour patting all my pockets to make sure I have not forgotten anything.

In fact it takes me half an hour patting all my pockets to make sure I have not forgotten anything. As they say in the church "Spectacles, testicles, wallet, and watch" I am of a different mindset/generation at a mere 40years of age, and use a mobile phone ALL day for work...I would be lost without it. Work only provide us with a basic Nokia, as more expensive models tend to get broken easily and I also have a laptop...BUT I also have my personal iPhone5 which is on a standard iPhone tariff for £36 unlimited everything. £36 !! You cry Yes, and on top of that I also have a 14yr old Daughter with an iPhone5 and the Wife with her iPhone4S. Luckily my boy is 10 and not yet begging for a phone, though I reckon he would strap his Xbox and electronic drum kit to his back if he could. Its reaching a ridiculous amount of money to pay-out each month, but I am lucky in that work pay for my home phone line and internet, and have a friend who works for Sky so I get reduced rates there too. I barely use the landline as I use my mobile for all my calls (except the 0844 etc). It all comes down to what you use your phone for. Mine is a phone/camera/GPS/email/web surfer, and for keeping in touch with the family when they are out and about. I don't use Facebook much, except to see what my Daughter is up to Mono

Mobile phones..........Well..........I always used to have Nokia jobbies & then changed to Samsung......I only have PAYG & was buying a £10 package each month until it suddenly dawned on me that I was barely using half of it & was losing money every month. I now just add credit as & when I need it. I upgraded 2 years ago to a touch screen Samsung Icon something & ended up lobbing it against a wall in frustration....Stoooooooooopid touch screen's are a nightmare for me. I'd compose a text & halfway through composing, the idiot phone would decide to send it, unfinished.....then, when trying to add credit via the phone, it would ask me to press a button, which I duly did, only for the swine automated woman to keep repeating..."sorry, I didn't get that"....so I binned it ( brand new, although slightly worse for wear after the argument with said wall ) & bought a second hand Samsung Tocco Ultra which I still have.....I too, used to consider myself tech minded, but phones now totally baffle me.........swine things.........

I'm quite a tech head and play with this stuff down to operating systems level. I had a old windows phone that I had dual booting into Windows Mobile and Android via a Linux shell. On the flip side ; I can't even keep the cement to even stay on the bastard brick let alone build the wall; I gave up trying to hang wallpaper years ago, and let the wife do it ; and I'm not allowed to go near the plumbing ( I'm allowed to do any electrics tho) . We all get a kick out of different toys, and have to be prepared to throw money at it. How much would you spend on a shiny new Mod Mono

Only time I really appreciate modern phones is when the worse case scenario happens and I have to catch a train to work, then I can appreciate all the sardines in London having something to ease their journey.......apart from that........ITS A BLEEDIN PHONE
Oh yeah annoying people with Pierre the parrot and Tom the cat is quite good though

I also got the Galaxy Ace at my last upgrade. I pay £8.50 a month and rarely use more than half my allowance even though I use it instead of the landline. The Ace is in the cupboard unused - after a couple of attempts at the kids' phones I decided to stick with what I know. I only have it on contract so I don't run out of credit when I most need it. It's a bit like the PS2 - once the kids could beat me I gave up playing - that was when the eldest was 7
