Sandra, I think the stale smell in my washing machine is cased by us living in a 'soft' water area and modern machines being cold fill only!

I think the lack of soap scum and conditioner build up is really helping!

I tend to use lavender, or whatever is near hand! This lady on ebay does some lovely blends

I've just read loads about these nuts. This site says to use 2 tablespoons of soda crystals. What I haven't found out is what the soda crystals are meant to do, do you know?

Ive started using the ecoballs that were recommended and am very please with them, I paid fifteen pounds off ebay and have enough for 1000 washes

@simate soda crystals are a general cleaning product that can also be used for laundry. Great for disolving grease etc. I only use around 1 teaspoonful in a wash with the soap nuts
