Totally off topic...but a fair part of my income relies on a computer. Over the years I've had many a hiccup when my PC has given up the ghost, and I've just bought a new one and carried on. Now, however, so much depends on the internet and all it's vagaries, but if your PC or laptop plays up, you can be stuffed.
My desktop is now playing up, and as I'm with BT and do not want to waste my time talking to John (from India, and it's not his fault he can't speak English! but I'm beginning to fear that our future wellbeing is under threat. We are so dependent on our online connections for personal or business, what do we do when it goes wrong?
Just wanted to be a doomsdayer! and perhaps generate some discussion.

If it goes wrong, lol.
Most people I would suggest are buggered, we rely so much on the internet these day it's unreal.
I know if mine goes down, I am hopping from foot to foot till it's reinstated.
I've been wondering this for ages and I don't have an answer, i don't really know how vulnerable the net is. I hear not very.

If the world stops, I have more things to worry about than ejuice. If it all goes wrong and that is the only reason I can see the net going down for a long length of time, then you need to have been prepping

Hi Womble,
I agree, it frightens me how dependent we all are on the internet.
We've stopped caring for our neighbours or looking out for those that cannot look out for themselves. I think this is even more true for the younger generation that have grown up in the 'virtual world'.

I think this is even more true for the younger generation that have grown up in the 'virtual world'. I haven't, in my village we haven't anyway. In general, yes I agree with you, I don't know the answer, it literally is a whole new world. If we had grown up in this society, we would have been different. As it is, we hark back to the good old days when people talked face to face and helped each other, yet it was never really like that. Being online has helped numerous people, people who can't get out, it has enabled people with small hobbies to meet others of their ilk (ecigs anyone?), it has enabled people with worries to meet others who feel the same. I don't think we can go back to how it was before.

The supermarkets fail, the government can only contact us through FM frequency's, there is no food for the populas, the water stops flowing through our taps, no gas, the electricity stops. What would you do then. lol

I too depend on t'internet for work, so I tether my phone (Giff Gaff give you unlimited internet for a very small fee) to my laptop in an emergency (read: when Virgin has a hiccup). If there was no internet, I'd be out of a job, but that's very unlikely to happen

The internet is about as secure as anything in this world could be - that was why it was first developed - it has no core, no centre that causes the rest to fail. As long as there are two computers in the world, connected by a phone line then there is an internet. What can fail is your connection to it, the biggest risk to that is your electrical supply, now if you want to talk about loosing electricity, that system is incredibly fragile and at breaking point much of the time.
