All I know is that if you use unprotected batteries in an unprotected mod, you're gonna die I've been searching high and low for protected 18350s from a decent manufacturer for my Dingo and mini gripper, and I can't find any Oh well, it has been nice knowing you all!

That's what I already have. They're great, but unprotected.

sleepyduck, I've just spent some time searching for you but I can't find any protected ones either (except trustfire).

Karma - I hadn't thought of that... -V- - I appear to have hijacked your thread. Sorry

one reason is that protected batteries can be a bit bigger so don't always fit! That's the first reason. Protected CELLS ( Pedant mode on one 18650 or similar is a cell, a bunch of cells connected together is a battery Pedant mode off ) have a circuit built into the case to do the protection and this increases the size compared to a cell without protection. The protection circuit has a limit to the current it can handle, if you go over this limit the circuit cuts off the supply ( if it's working properly if it's not it just melts the circuit and the cell is of no use anymore ;-) ) So if an electronic mod tries to draw more current than the protection circuit can handle it will shut down. Whether this happens or not depends on the cell chosen and the electronic mod and the setting you have it at. It's not dangerous using a protected cell in an electronic mod, just inadvisable. An electronic mod will have everything built into it that the protection circuit does, assuming it's a decent mod :-) Using an unprotected cell in a mech mod is potentially dangerous. The protection circuit prevents the cell from being over discharged, which will kill it. It also prevents too much current being drawn from the cell, which can lead to: overheating, hot gasses being discharged, fire or explosion. Hope that helps. :-)
