sorry last post but reading more it is possible its the main battery i just cant tell from the error msg you are getting sorry
do you get the msg when the power cable is plugged in then turned on or only when running on battery ?

Accessing the CMOS battery varies with laptop model. Some are easy to access, just take one of the covers off the base of the lappy, others require a full strip-down to be able to reach them (Dell, you listening ?? )

HP are one of the better manufacturers for having Service & Maintenance Manuals available via their website, if you post the full model number we'll be able to advise better

I get the message when plugged in Punisher, I never run it without it plugged in cos the battery drains so quickly ....................aaaahhaaaa is that a clue as to which battery is giving the problem she asks herself. Yes I think that's the one Punisher, I've just noticed a G56 on the frame just below the screen that I never even noticed before hahaha o. Only had the laptop about 3 years

ok before this thread runs away internal battery to me sound like a c mos battery but the 601 error could be either battery
just 1 easy thing to test
when its switched off and you turn it on check your time and date if c mos is dead the date will drop back to the day it was manufactured
or even check time and date now whilst its on

Windows 7. I really thank you and appreciate the time you have taken over this Punisher, you are a superstar. Think I am going to buy the big battery and if that doesn't solve the problem then I know it will be the small one hahaha. I will post the outcome on here.

in order to check time/date, you first need to remove the main battery, as most models will still run the BIOS clocks off the main one even if the CMOS one is dead, so unplug from mains, remove main battery, then plug in mains and start up lappy. If you still get the error it's the CMOS battery.
