According to 'HP experts' on this HP page it is NOT the cmos battery, but the 'power' battery. On that page, follow the advice of DavidPK (HP expert), and run the battery checker application that I linked previously. This will tell you if/which battery is worn out - I suspect it is the big one, as I believe in laptops (being different to desktops in this matter), power for the 'Real Time Clock' is drawn from the big battery if it has power. Only when it is flat as a pancake, is power token from the little cmos battery (generally a CR2032, which are cheap as chips). Be wary when sourcing replacement power battery - you generally 'get what you pay for'.

Aaaw thank you all so, so much. It's ok Punisher I never take offence at comments like that because in our house after 42 years wedded bliss I do everything and I mean everything. a bit of electrics, a bit of decorating, a bit of plumbing, a LOT of cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing and a HUGE amount of baking. But in my spare time my favourite pastime is VAPING Thank you Bluefish and Fred Going to replace the big battery and see if that does the job if not I'll go to plan B icon_shoppingm

Is this fixed/answered?
I have had exclusively HP laptops since about 2000. I have had messages like this before and *although I cannot guarantee this is the same* I always guessed it was HPs way of telling me my battery was getting under a certain percentage of it's ability to hold power.
In these instances, I have changed the battery. Laptop batteries are "fairly" or "exactly" specific to the model and be extra careful ordering a replacement. You don't need an HP one, but certainly find one made to the original standard spec. My batteries were mostly a "bank" of batteries all joined up, and like an e-cig battery, there are good and bad. I bought a few off ebay from decent UK sellers that sell 1,000s and never bought a bogus one.

Hi djs and many thanks for your help. I have just done the battery check following the link that Fred kindly put up and yes it is the primary battery. I don't suppose you have any links for reputable vendors on ebay that you have used have you?

I don't suppose you have any links for reputable vendors on ebay that you have used have you? You know what, I searched ebay for my previous purchases, and I can find nothing over 6 months old. I'm 99.9% certain you can do this, but I just don't seem to be able to find it. Odd...

I would just go with one of ebay that has decent feedback sue, i've never had a problem yet, just triple check it is the correct size, well saying that that's not exactly helpfull as nowadays same as with e-cig batteries ie an 18650, you can get them with different capacitys, there will be the origional manufacturers specification battery, and after market ones that have/hold more power but still made to fit your machine, so you could buy one with maybe more cells that would last longer than the origional, so as long as you buy one from some one with good feedback, what above 95% you should be ok
