could the card credit or debit charge be because you are offered protection by the card via that method over x amount and as paypal dont give protection on gifts this would cause them hassle so there steering you away from it. Can't see what protection they can give... it's a gift! lol anything you buy with a credit card is protected via the card, providing it is over i believe £100, some debit cards are also protected. the credit card protection can be for a very long period of time, years in fact if the goods are faulty etc. paypal dont like you having double protection on the NON gift purchases as if paypal dont act on a bad sale they get there arse kicked by mastercard etc etc, but there is nothing they can do too stop you using double protection, other wise they would lose too many sales. regarding GIFT payments: the fact that you have called it a gift may or may not mean what it states as it is a transaction regardless of what it is called. ie: if you send £100 to your mum for xmas it wont necessarily be protected but if you buy a fridge from joe blogs for £100 and pay by gift on your credit card you will have card protection albeit not too the degree you would have if it was a shop. that is how i believe it works and that is why i think paypal dont like it. anything i buy via paypal over £100 is paid from my credit card because if i have a problem and paypal dont deal with it i know that mastercard will force them to deal with it or they will retrieve the money from them. but then i could be wrong. raggy...........

I just made a "payment to friend or family" it would have charged me 88p if the funds hadn't already been in my paypal account, as it was I was a bit short so I transfured some money from my account, as in I made a payment. Mev As for stopping paypal getting money from your account I think its set up as a direct debit so you should be able to cancel that from your bank, no?

what i meant was if you change you payment type in your paypal account from card to bank transfer as I did and is very easy to do in the settings, you then cannot change it back again if you change your mind. There are no settings to change it back and when contacting CS they said it's impossible to do. Therefore I now have to change it manually on every transaction if I want to.
The reason I don't like using bank transfer as default is it as you say is DD and doesn't show for a few days on your bank account, I use PP for a lot of buying and selling and prefer to keep more up to date.

I have my bank account linked to my Paypal account along with two credit cards. If you have a positive balance in your Paypal account, then that is where the payment for a purchase will come from. If you have a zero balance in your Paypal account the the default option is from the linked bank account but you only have to click on method of payment to change it to your credit card.......though sometimes if I am too quick to pay without changing the method of payment, then it will take it from my bank account which is annoying. If I am paying by Paypal family and friends (Paypal Gift`s new name) then I always pay from my linked bank account, then I don't pay any fees and the seller doesn't pay any fees but more importantly Paypal doesn`t get a bean
