"Should 'art' make you think & feel, rather than just admire"
in my opinion if it doesn't have emotional/psychological impact in some form then it isn't art, i imagine that particular piece has people stopping in there tracks,

I was going to say it would have been better to put their names on each stone, but part of the sadness is that many were unknown. Definitely a pause for thought.

I'm always worried about imposing rules on "what art is" - its a repressive point of view and creativity needs freedom to express if its going to develop. It can contain any or all of the elements that any of us wish to apply to as a requirement for our own personal view of what art is. However failing to tick all of my boxes will not mean that something isn't art to another - and therefore equally as valid as something I hold up to be true art. Look Dad, see I did learn sommat at Art School

this quote from Wikiquote sums Art up for me
"Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music and literature."

More of a memorial than art imo.

There's a Community Art Project where I live. People with learning difficulties or mental health problems can access it, as can any member of the community although priority is given to these members of the community. A 'local artist' wanted to start a workshop/gallery for local people to show their artistic creations. When asked if the 'Community Art Project' could be involved was answered 'no' as there were no commissioned artists! There actually are a couple of commissioned artists that are members of the project! I hate when art gets snobby. Art should be experiential and what one person thinks is art another person will not like, it's very subjective. Art can carry a message, it is creative and should bring a sense of enjoyment and achievement to the artist. Art isn't about who can paint the best picture

I hope no one does any damage to that very moving piece of art… it makes me think and realise just how lucky I am to be sitting in such comfort and freedom.
Last year some mindless drunken youths decided to deface our war memorial not long after Remembrance Day. Needless to say there was up-raw and the culprits where caught and dealt with very severally.
Art in my opinion should stir all sorts of emotions. (Thanks for posting One)

A few hundred yards further on is the Road of Remembrance - a hill linking the town to the harbour which the troops marched down to embark for the trenches. The fence down the road is permanently adorned with hundreds of hand-knitted poppies which also go untouched

As you may have guessed from my avatar, I am a musician. As aural art, I think it's critical that music should arouse the emotions, otherwise it is just noise. There are so many different genres of music, all with their admirers and critics, that it is unfair to single out any for consideration. However, music can move the soul like no other thing on earth - it connects with us through our memories, our emotions (some of them raw and unadorned), and enables us to communicate our feelings in a powerful and abstract way with others. It could be a group of African drummers, a rock band, a solo singer or a full symphony orchestra; they all have massive power to move us in ways that sometimes we can't even express in words. It can equally apply to all other art-forms too, and that's what I find so fascinating about the whole thing. That, folks, is art.

Andy Well put, apart from the bit about "just noise".........enlighten me, what noise is unable to connect with emotions, I really can't imagine it......

Noise is 'unwanted sound', whereas music is an intentional combination of sound and silence. Granted, noise can connect with the emotions, but music connects at a much higher level, combining pitch, duration, timbre, tone, dynamics and texture. Music's ability to help communicate and express emotion has always been central to its understanding. Music connects with the basic neural cognition in the brain and affects us on many levels of enjoyment and pleasure. Again, this can apply to both a symphony orchestra or lone guitar - the effect is the important part here, not the genre or volume. Noise can also connect with the brain and our emotions, but does so on a more basic level. Our base emotions are not stimulated by noise in the same way that the structured composition of music does.
