All my working life I have done jobs where there was no set days off. Bank holidays or Festive holidays, everything had to be covered from a purely safety or service point of view 24/7.
Now that I am retired, these "official"(?) holidays are a right pain in the botty.
Take this morning for instance. First off, over to the post office to send some e-juice to a fellow member. PO shut. Bank holiday. Round to the next village to the Chemist for some distilled water. Shut. Bank Holiday. Home again and phoned my insurance company to get insurance sorted out. Shut, Bank Holiday.
Both myself and my wife had jobs that meant our departments were covered day and night at all times, we find it very frustrating that so many firms shut up shop for the vaguest of reasons and don't even have a skeleton staff on for enquiries.
No wonder so many people are turning to the Internet for their shopping and so many shops on the High Street are shutting down. People have the choice of sitting in their own home and doing their shopping online, or making the effort to physically go to the shops for their goods, yet these same shops that shut at every conceivable opportunity are moaning that they are not making any money.
The Banks take a holiday so the whole country shuts up shop for the day. What kind of a cockamamie country are we living in?

I feel for you mate but on the other hand i dont. I never get bank hols off except xmas day and i now have a 3 hour journey back up from south devon to shepton mallet in all the bank holiday traffic in my truck. It is going to be rubbish. Now if everybody was at work or shopping it would not be so bad so agree with you about that.

I love bank holidays I get a 4 day weekend as Tuesday is my day off so it's nice to be able to chill out and not have to pack everything in to one day! I don't bother going to the seaside like everyone else as the traffic jams annoy me so do feel for you rosco but lazy days in the garden trying to get a pre holiday tan is great!

I will just wait until tomorrow and then it will be a 4 mile round trip, when I can combine other shopping in as well. It all just seems so pointless that a number of shops around here and in the local town are closing down "because of lack of business" yet these same shops are the ones that are shut on Bank Holidays when other folks are off work and want to go shopping.

Having worked Bank Holidays for years in various shops, it's a real treat to now not be . . . especially as the weather is so lovely. I wouldn't mind more. Nothing I need is so vital it can't wait until after the holiday . . .

Lobey when I lived in Scotland many years ago each little town had it's bank holidays on different days spread through the year, and there was an annual calendar showing what towns were shut on what days. So if your town was on a bank holiday the next one over was open. Have they all adopted the 'national' holidays now?

Oh well, in that case I'll go back to bed and not get up until tomorrow when the world returns to normal.
No point in wasting an otherwise dull day!

It's been a lovely and mildly productive day here. I sat out on the deck this morning with my coffee, listened to the tweeting birds and admiring the blossom in the sunshine. Then I spray painted a bin, hung up my glass candle holders, hemmed some curtains for the kitchen snug and have rediscovered the joys of my cinnamon danish swirl mix All of my clients, however, as they are not in the UK, forgot that it was a bank holiday here despite the week's notice I gave them, so have been pestering me with work emails. I've taken great pleasure in ignoring them

Think I remember reading somewhere that we have the fewest public holidays in Europe. Cheer up Lobey, there's another Bank Holiday in a couple of weeks
