If I told you I can just about switch a computer on without crashing it would that explain my very limited knowledge Thanks for the reply anyway. Just wondering if an "all-in-one" computer is your special name for a "laptop"? ??? - if so, that would possibly change some of the previous answers. Ummmmm....Nooooooo I did mean an all in one computer. I may be very technicaly challenged but I wooooould just like to point out that I'm not a complete Numpty

No offence intended, & I don't think you took any I used to work in IT support, and you wouldn't believe some of the stuff that happens. Have a look here for few examples on mice. ( Here is link to loads more, but I personally, had lot of problems with mice)

Just wondering if some of the clever tech-heads on here can explain the pro's and con's of buying an all in one computer. My first thoughts when I saw them recently... wow! space saving.. gonna have one of them However... Says I to me... I have a host of clever friends to ask advice from before I make another expensive mistake.. any advice for or against would be very much appreciated people ? @gdart, My daughter recently bought an Apple imac 27" which are all in one, if you contact them the sell referb with full warranty & look like new, also if you have any other Apple products the connect together seemlessly, hers was one of these & is an excellent piece of kit. They are a little on the pricey side but look & work great, she ordered 1 day arrived the next. store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/imac/27

Basically if you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you wont feel the need to upgrade it, then it is a great option as is a laptop as fred says. There generally isn`t a lot of space in them, but they are tidy. I had a similar PC but wasn`t happy with the graphics capabilities after about a year, but it simply wasn`t physically possible to fit anything else in there (it had onboard graphics when new)

I built my first PC over 20 years ago !! And what a lot of people don't really understand is how easy it is to put a PC together all by them self's, there are very few areas where you could go wrong, and you would be saving yourself a large amount of cash. Also on the plus side you will know exactly what make of parts you are putting it together with. From my experience many of these ready made PC's have very often in them very low grade parts.

It's a hard one to call. I buy laptops in the £350-400 price bracket and pray I can get 3-4 years out of it. I back up the laptop fully after purchase, just in case the hard disk drive goes....after all, a recovery partition is pointless if the hard drive itself is kaput.
As for "big" computers, I make my own using a "barebones" type package. All in ones are fine if you can afford one the same way as a laptop. Apples seem safe enough as if/when they break, Apple seem curiously able to fix them, sometimes without charge too. But, the upfront cost is quite scary. These days, I'd have thought you could buy a small form factor PC for £400 odd and sit it behind a nice flat screen monitor.
