Is it possible to get a tap and die set capable of making a thread inside metal tubes, I mean tubes that are big enough to house a battery? And if so are threads all common sizes or do they vary a lot?

If you're looking to match atty threads, then at a guess, I'd say the were metric threads. There is quite a bit of variation in thread types though. You'd need to match the diameter and pitch of the thread.

I'd start with metric options i.e. M6, M8, M9, M10 etc.
