When I was a kid my dad used to let me put my pocket money in a special money box under the stairs...
I was fifteen before I found out it was the bloody gas meter!

Mev. When I was very young my dad told me that the `music` only played when the `ice-cream` van was "empty". He was a very `canny` person. jeffc

We had one of those pound coin TV's and I used to get sent to the shop all the time for change so we could watch TV that evening lol. I cottoned on quickly and refused to go unless I could get a 20p mix haha

I remember when I was babysitting for my parents the elec meter was high up in an alcove above the front door and the only way you could access it was climb up via the shelves at the side, crawl across the shelf to the meter to put money in it..............I shudder to think that if it collapsed I'd do myself an injury.........or worse the gas meter was in a cubby hole under the stairs.............it was always full of spiders

I was horrified to learn that they still use the £1 boxes in tv's, a friends ex partner had got a tv from shitehouse (aka brighthouse) and it came with one so they got their monies. Horrifying.

We had a pound slot TV only a few months back, then I realised a metal coat hanger bent into a loop could trigger the mechanism. They came to collect and demanded payment. I gave the telly back and blamed it on the wife.
Also did you and your parents ever play that game "lying on the floor when the rent man came" I have developed it into "lying on the floor when the mother in law comes" Its my favourite game. That and picking things up with my feet pretending I'm a monkey.
Just an insight into my life.... Its awesome.
Regards Jez

Geeez I feel old. I can remember when you put a sixpence in to get electric. Or am I wrong? Maybe it was thrupence. 'twas definitely sixpence in my Christmas pudding though. Took me years to work out why me and my sister were always the lucky ones to get one inside our portion wrapped in grease proof paper.

Crikey, I must be really old.
I remember as a small child going to the corner shop and getting a "FARTHING" toffee chew.
For you youngsters among us there were 960 farthings in `One` pound, or 0.104 p today`s money.
Mind you my Dad only earned £8.00 for a 46 hour week.
How times have changed (improved ???).
