If I was 40 years younger I would be EMIGRATING. jeffc ... BUT where to? Australia has had record floods & fires, USA has hurricanes, tornadoes, horrific snow storms, Spain has record unemployment and debt, ditto Greece. About the only place I haven't heard horror stories about is Canada... but even there you need to like the cold! Jeff, I think we're both that old that we just remember the good times from our youth, and when we had no internet, no 24/7 news... so we just didn't hear about all the problems in the world, whether they were man made or the results of nature.

Hi Raffles. I agree with your observations, regarding our `shrinking world` via internet etc. But what has happened here in the UK these past 25 years +. Neighbours barely talk or help each other,to busy with their own lives. Very few people reply when I wish them `good morning` or `hello` (old school courtesy). Children no longer safe to be left out to play. The community I find is segmented, friendlyness no longer applies. Look after our own attitude applied. I am concerned for my grandchildren future, residing in the UK. The `British` values seem to be diluted with each new generation and the make up of our population. I may be wrong in my own conclusions, but I feel we are no longer a `happy nation`. That`s enough of my views for what it`s worth.
jeffc (old school).

jeffc, I totally agree. I live on a 'park home' estate where you have to be over 50. Everyone respects each other and we all get on well. My sons, each live in 'cul de sacs' where neighbours are really 'neighbours'. The way of living today is me, me, me... and I just wish I knew the answer, because I fear it is just going to get worse. We have lost that 'community' spirit, although the response in Woolwich is a hopeful sign of turning this around... from 'bad' can come 'good'... let's just hope so.

I totally agree with what you and jeffc have said. I have lived in this street 3yrs I consider myself a very friendly person happy to help anyone, yet, I can count on one hand the amount of times any of my neighbours have made the effort to speak. But jeff, emigrating would ot solve the problems. I have lived in three countries. All of them the same. I made very good friends down there who I am still in contact with today, but not one was a neighbour. People seem to have lost the art of conversation and community spirit.
As for moving for weather reasons. I rarely moan about British weather. When you have been a Sydney postie having to deliver mail in temps over 40 degrees and heat that goes on and on and on relentlessly, it puts UK weather into perspective. Give me this anyday.

I live in a caravan on the west Wales coast. Sometimes I wish I was still smoking, me and swmbo used to share cigis just to keep our hands warm. Or all huddle around a candle. Ahhh poverty Regards Jez

Well, this morning my hubby and I sat out on our deck in our cul de sac and had a very nice chat with the neighbour over the fence in the glorious sunshine whilst birds tweeted and bees buzzed. Some things are still right with the world
