It's totally legal to vape anywhere and everywhere,
however ....
If you do not want the attention, you can 'stealth vape'
Just hold the vape in for 10 seconds or so - it will cool down to ambient temperature.
When you exhale there will be no vapour, as it will be at ambient temp.
In neither stealth or normal manner would it trigger smoke / fire alarms on planes hotels.

Roscopecotrain I did a test some time ago and posted a video that if you blow vapour into a domestic smoke alarm it will trigger it.

It could just be your taste buds playing up. however, you can easily (& very cheaply), make your menthol juice a stronger flavour by adding a tiny amount of menthol crystals.
