Dremel Advice Needed

Right, I am looking at purchasing a Dremel for modding, I have been looking through the argos website (as i have a love2shop voucher for £10 to assist knocking down the price)

That's not a bad deal there, especially with your voucher.

Maplin or eBay are good places, look for 'rotary tool' or 'hobby tool'

I think one of the best buys for me was the flexible drive shaft, makes life a lot easier.

Closely followed by chuck bore adapters which allow for use of different size bits.

You can pick up kits of grinders, cutters, polishers etc for a couple of quid almost anywhere.

Cheers raid2506 Yeah i will be looking at getting a flexi shaft, i was drooling over the dremel 4000 but the price tag puts me off, the 3000 with my voucher brings it sub £30 which is a bargain i think!

this accessories pack seems good value for money digi haven't got them myself yet, still deciding which rotary tool to go for.

That pack could very well be a false economy mate, half the bits will probably fall to bits, if you read the reviews the quality control isn't exactly spot on i.e.. off centre mounting

I got the 3000 on a B&Q special deal for about £30 ish, its a nice good quality tool, I see no point in spending more.

Yeah i can't justify the 4000, the 3000 it is! thanks.

It'll be the highest quality tool i own anyway, I'm not normally one for tools, more micro tools for computers etc.

A stack of Dremel tips for you:

Immediately get a drill press vise or similar, only about £5 but will save many fingertips.

Buy genuine Dremel mandrels, about £1.50 each but just buy generic cutting disks by the bucket load. I have tried every make and they are all roughly the same, sometimes one last for ages other times they shatter on the first cut or when you drop them

Get a few different sized collets about £1 for 3, allows you to use other makes of drills and grinders/polishers.

You will quickly collect 100's of cutters, grinders etc but only really use a few. Buy them cheap and then get higher quality versions of the ones you actually use.

Screw a hook into the ceiling behind your work space and hang your tool from a bungee cord or even two if you are sitting down. Keeps your work space clear and gives a good angle for your flexible shaft.

Wrap around safety glasses, you will find you are often working with your eye directly on the cutting line and the tool surprisingly close to your face.

I agree with raid2506.
For decent attachments dremel are excellent - so are proxxon and bosch if you come across them.
I keep meaning to get hold of the flexishaft as it does make things much easier, I had one but lent my multitool to someone else who broke and lost pieces (never again).
After more than a decade of multitool/hobbytool use I have a wide selection of collet sizes and mandrels and just tend to buy cheap disposables rather than the expensive ones. Also polishing compounds are fun but for most polishing I've found Tesco everyday(value) toothpaste works just as well as the real compounds unless the material is very hard. For specialist attachments buy the branded ones as the cheap ones just break.

I would also say until you are used to using it with the various materials, always start low speed and slowly increase to get the best effect. I've seen too many people just whack the power on and end up losing control or burning/melting the object they're working on.

touch it to sanding discs as well, you will get loads more use out of them. On the Carbide burrs a quick flashing with a blow torch will clean all the crap off.

dont buy too cheap as i was gifted one and the torque was abysmal the minute it touched the item it slowed down to useless
grab a workstation can free up both hands and make life much easier
