As far as I'm aware from having been a first aider for many years as well as having some nursing training as him indoors says it is a last/emergency resort. One of the reasons for this is if done you then really need to go to hospital to have your insides checked over as while it may have cleared your airway, it might also have caused internal damage as it is far more violent than it appears. People have had internal bleeding or damaged ribs after the heimlich.

The trouble is if someone collapses unconscious on their back, they will stop breathing and they will be dead in around 4-8 minutes. Ambulances try to get there within 15 mins in emergencies.

Your hubby did exactly the right thing by keeping an eye on the situation, he showed a lot of calm IMO, deserves a pat on the back (pardon the pun) - if the casualty is breathing, making choking sounds etc. things normally sort themselves out. If they are making no sound (not making effective breaths) then the next step is to perform back slaps. If this has no success after 3 blows then as a last resort you perform abdominal thrusts. (I'm a nurse too ) The boys father did punch his back several times. OH is one of those people you meet in life that is so calm and laid back you'd be forgiven for thinking he's asleep half the time!! mind you, he's been doing his job for over 30yrs. Seen it all!
