i was thinking more of a thin drill bit size ??? the M3 bolt looks too thick imo but i've only tried to recoil a nova a couple of times freehand

The groves in a drill bit are too widely spaced, a screw has finer threads (mostly) and You can get them in lots of sizes and thread pitches. Whatever you use will need to come out of the coil, a screw can be unscrewed, a needle with groves is going To pull at something as it is extracted.

maybe grooves just on one side so when its twisted, the coils sit in the ungrooved (maybe flat) side therefore enabling a smooth extraction? can you see what i'm getting at? i shall go see what screws i have.

That's not a bad idea something like a small rod with grooves cut just one side to evenly space coil then twist it to remove

Although a screw (hur hur) sounds best, you could just cut some grooves in a toothpick or bamboo knitting needle

i would rather it be metal for longevity usage. the way i tried was.... darning needle held on top of wick then wrap the wire around both, so something of this size to encompass both wick and wire ? i'm just throwing the idea out there, hoping someone more knowledgeable will give it a go.
plan B is taking my dead heads to vapefest and crossing fingers LOL

Fill one side of an M2/3 and each end (personal choice) with epoxy so you have grooves where you want them and the coil will screw/slide off. Well I know what I mean if nobody else does ...
