Spukey............Just straighten out a paper clip.......hold the wick against it..then coil it......you don't need grooves....when you've coiled it, keep it on the paperclip & space out the coils with a needle or something....simples.

exactly chrisjw! i'm too cack handed! so if i had something that immediately spaced the coils, would be better for me and folk like me how do they do them precoiled when you buy them? have they got a sweat shop of little children doing them?

If you want to coil with the wick in place then just file one side of the screw/bolt flat after filling all the unwanted threads ... the wick should sit on the flat section ... You could do this with several, each screw having the correct amount of threads for different Devices/ Resistance
Sorry, I'm thinking RSST (larger wick holes etc) types here not tiny EVOD/Nova

Spikey it's not really possible to do what you're hoping, grooves one side won't make it any easier to get out than using a normal screw/bolt, also if you're wanting your wick in there too it's going to be too loose afterwards. The option above to file one side of a screw/bolt is a good one as that would allow for your wick and the best compromise in my opinion, otherwise just using a thin pin is the best but you'd have to space your coils yourself.

I presume you're going to do the filing on the screw/bolt spunkey.........good luck with that one..............

I use a smooth end of a drill bit then thread the silica through afterwards.

OMG! That guy made an interesting subject painful to watch.
I have never seen something so simple explained soooo slowly!

@spikeyfridge - I can see where you are coming from (hur hur), and think it's a great little idea. A slim darning needle like what I use, but with grooves on one (approx.) third of the circumference enabling you to wind into the slots. Once the coil is complete, a 180 deg twist of the needle, and the slots re-align with the wick and you simply slide the needle out. I don't have the technical skill to make something like this, but I'm sure someone on here does. raid2506 - you have successfully saved me a few minutes of pointless viewing - I can wind wicks by hand in about 20secs - if this video is longer than that, it will be time badly spent! Andy

Surely it's easier to wrap your coils with the wick in situ using a pin or something similar for support.
They don't have to be pretty to work - some of my efforts are living proof of that!

I nicely tightly wound coil (not tight around wick) heat's up much better though.
It's easy enough to wind your coils around a bolt then thread your wick through..
