It's still very high. I worked as a contractor for many years until recently. 3-5% fees are the norm, your son is being taken for a ride on the slave labour train. Agencies tend to do this with people who dont know any better. I would go onto the Acas website and have a chat with someone there.

3 quick points for you
1. It's illegal for an agency in the UK to charge the employee a fee for finding work, that includes a deduction from hourly pay. Any fee's must be paid to the agency by the company. The company also cannot pay him directly, he must be paid by the agency otherwise he is deemed to be employed by the company.
2. Minimum wage is minimum wage, if unauthorised deductions take the hourly rate below the threshold then that's illegal too.
3. On a 12 hour shift he is entitled to 20 minutes of breaks. A 20 minute break is to be taken if the work period is 6 hours or more and not at start or end of shift. So they are giving him a free 25 minutes of break. If he is under 18 then he is entitled to 30 minutes every 4.5 hours.

Agree with all that's been said................its the company that the agency should take the percentage from.........not from your son's wages

Just a quick update: My son quit the job two days ago, he said when he got moved to night time work it was a nightmare, over 60 people in a very small room not even enough room for him to even move his arm without nudging someone, also said nobody in the room spoke a word of English. Sounds like a sweat shop to me

Yes thats how i feel for them, its a shame because all most of them want is to work & earn some money, my grandson who is 21 left school & went to college for two years training to be a plumber, he could not get an apprenticeship anywhere so wasted 2 years for nothing. Then he tried a 5 month Government course programming computers he was out of the house 13 hours daily including commuting & was paid £95 weekly, but promised work after the course ended & income of £22000, guess what no job materialised. He now works in a warehouse for Asos for the minimum wage but is just happy to have a job.

It sounds so familiar dinamic22 for my son and his GF being promised so much with the end result being zilch, blame the recession for bushiness taking advantage of the youngsters
