You can also try removing an inch or so of the copper mesh shielding from a co-ax cable and wrapping it top to bottom over your spring. If it stops getting hot then the spring is the problem. This one is on the inside but you get the idea.

The heat is a dead giveaway that its got a connection problem resistance + load/power = heat. Thats why your coil makes vapour, at the other end. Give the cap, spring and threads a good clean, a rub with wet and dry or wire brush On the faces that touch.

As soon as I came home from work tonight I got straight to putting all of your suggestions to the test. i firstly stretched the spring so that the battery doesn't rattle around inside, thank you DJ Des. Then I rubbed everything there is to rub with wet and dry, thank you mark m. As it was pouring with rain and would have meant a trip to the shed to find some cable I thought I would try the above first, thank you raid. I am so pleased my vamo is now working perfectly again. I've been doing some homework whilst vaping like mad for the past 2 hours. No hot cap/spring, no turning itself off. Thank you everyone that gave me advice, I am so grateful and hope one day I'll be able to return your kindness.

welshwestie - really glad the forum suggestions worked for you, there is nothing more frustrating than having a bit of kit which isn't working or that you can't get to work. That's why I use Protanks almost exclusively now, apart from the IGO-L for dripping, which is just so easy to get working. I can't be doing with the hassle of mesh wicks and everything else at the moment. Perhaps when I've retired I'll have more time to fiddle!! Although by that time we'll probably have mind control and we will be able to vape just by thinking about it!
