Hi all, I want to start playing with some micro coils and wondered what the best gauge wire to use? Currently I have 0.2 a as I am just putting an order together I wondered if I should be using a different gauge that would give better results? Any advise would be apreciated

I watched a video yesterday and as I understand it you need to use one of the thicker guages so around .3 may be the way to go, Calling Greigster too comment? EDIT: see the post HERE

EDIT: see the post HERE DiscoDesHi Des, I use .30 Kanthal which allows you to wind more coils with a lower resistance, consequently covering more of the wick length. I have been reading that others have tried .42 Kanthal with good results but there comes a point where the size of the coil/wraps will not fit the attie and there will be a delay in the heating of the coil. So for me at this time, my view is .30 Kanthal is a happy medium, no delay in firing up, low resistance and it fits most atties. Cheers Neil

Gents you are extremely helpful, only downside is mesh company doesn't do 0.3 kanthal :-( the biggest they seem to go is 0.25. May have order the 0.3 else where Thanks for the quick responses

Greigster you are The Man, thanks for the link I was on another site of the same name. Now while I'm ordering I might have a cracking with wire rope in my rsst, now what do I go for? Sorry for the questions but as we all know it is the quickest way to learn!

gapy360, I have never used wire rope so I cant really advise but I have read that the ribbon kanthal works well in gennies both on the rope and mesh wicks. I had a brief play with gennesis atties but I have always prefered silica/cotton/bamboo myself. There are many experienced Genny users on here that will advise you on this thread I am sure

I personally don't like wire rope or mesh - I use bamboo, cotton and sometimes Ekowool, so I can't comment on that.
The microcoils work best with 0.30 to 0.40mm Kanthal. I usually use 0.35 for mechanical and 0.30 for regulated. The idea is that an 8-9 wrap microcoil is optimal, and I adjust the wire (and the inner diameter) to result in my target resistance.
Try bamboo yarn or cotton in the RSST - it works great (and for me, tastes a lot better than ole mesh)

Omg all these new things to try! So I'll leave the rope for now, happy with the mesh at the mo on the rsst so will concentrate on the cotton and micro coils on th he protank! Then maybe get some bamboo yarn and then moved onto the rsst to play! Thanks for your time and advice today

Thanks Dan I appreciate that. I've left it off the order for the mo as I have plenty to try out but consider it next time

Ok so i have just done my first microcoil with what I had so used 0.2 wire with cotton from some balls. Coil came out at 2.6ohms due to the wire (7 wraps) and it's in the protank. Vapour is definitely increased and taste is good. So I'm on my way. Will try for a lower ohm when the supplies arrive from the mesh company but for a first attempt I'm pretty happy. I think I'll keep a spare head with silica in my bag incase the cotton burns when I'm out and about. Thanks for all the advice guys.
