I do understand that spiders need to build webs. And I do understand that they do it a LOT at this time of year.
But why do they put those single strands at face height between the hedge and your car, or the back door and the bin, or everywhere else you're going to walk every damn day??

Be happy that there isn't an actual spider on the end of the web, now that would be bad

I have the very same thing between the hedge and magnolia tree in our front garden. It always seems to be worse at night! Saying that, after living in Australia I find it hard to get worked up about the spiders we have here. We had one of these live in our house huntsman spider australia photo EDIT can't get link to work

Very true Blownupdolly. I remember reading somewhere that 8 of the world's 10 most poisonous animals live in Australia

At least those huntsmen spiders don't make face-hugging webs!

My sons friend made the mistake of visiting yesterday. My daughter had him clearing out her room looking for a large house spider.
Took him over an hour, but bless him he found it and put it outside, though he had stepped on its front legs before seeing it.

The single strand is how the young leave the nest and travel before they are big enough to eat each other

I'm not clicking it either 4madcats the big ones i see in the garden or conservatory are bad enough. Which reminds me of a couple of years ago, we had been to Kos on holiday & as we got off the aircraft i knew i wanted the loo for a tinkle but decided to wait & use my own loo when i got home as the airport is only approx 30 mins from us. On reaching home 11-50pm i ran in, (in the dark didn't bother with the light in the loo either) had a tinkle washed my hands & went to put the kettle on for a drink (hubby had put lights on by this time) hubby comes back from loo & says "did you wash your hands after the toilet" course i have i replied, he says "did you turn light on in there" me "no why" he says "go & have a look in the sink" i go in & peep over the sink & theres a massive spider in there & i had washed my hands over it, needless to say i never use the loo now without turning the light on first.
