We have a real mixture of people knocking. From about 6pm the little ones with adults, they get sweets, then shift change at 7pm teenagers. I put a notice up saying no money given out which usually stops half the teenagers knocking.
One lot frighten one of my sons one year by grabbing the tray with sweets and trying to take the lot. So now if I am in I only answer the door between 6-7pm then telly on low and curtains shut.

I'm just a misery I don't mind if it's young kids that I know with a grown up but I don't really know any young kids anymore. I can't stand the dog barking all the time every time the door goes. You would think the lights out thing would be a hint When mine were young either myself or a friend would throw a big Halloween party so the kids were always too busy to go knocking on doors begging trick or treating.

I think the kids round here must be from a different planet. The young kids come round, always with an adult guardian who stays well back. They only come to houses with pumpkins (but as I don't normally do pumpkin I draw a sign for my window saying they are welcome. They have all made an effort to dress up, and when we pass the bowl of sweets to them they ALWAYS only take one, even when I have clearly said take a few! Sometimes I say you can take a few more if you want, some tentatively (after a look to the adults to check it is ok) take another ONE! And some say no thank you. Then they all say thanks and the parents give you a smile, and they are off looking for the next house! Later in the evening we get some groups of teenagers round, BUT they are young teenagers, all dressed up and just as polite as the youngsters. That is identical how mine goes

Curtains and blinds open and light on. We don't seem to get the teenages anymore since I swapped to giving sweets out instead of money, so it is nice to see the little ones with their parents

We don't have kids knocking any more either. I think they have all grown up now. Great excuse to close the curtains and watch TV with our favourite treats.

We've done it both ways .... but for us it is still a foreign habit that should have remained overseas.
And I dare to say that having an American wife. (She also thinks it is nonsense.)
Jag. (Bonfire night is as far as I go, on the first date .......)

I go out or pretend to be out. I loathe Halloween. Oh, and Bonfire Night. And Christmas. Bah humbug.

Not a big fan of Halloween, me. That said, we do buy one of those bumper sweets bags, but TBH we are so off the beaten track, and on a busy lane, that we don't get many visitors, and that means that the weets get put in the bottom of the fridge, and somehow mysteriously but slowly disappear and are all gone before Christmas (along with any intention of 'having a lean month or so before the Christmas pig-out!).
