I've started a friend of mine off on e-cigs, but he's having a big problem with it and I don't know how to get him over this problem. He's got a Kanger mini protank 2 so it's a decent tank for starting off with and he has got tobacco flavoured juice at both 18mg and 9mg at 70/30 mix. The problem he is having is that as soon as he takes even a little mini puff he gags and coughs, let alone taking a full puff on it. He has been trying to use it on and off for the past 3-4 weeks but it's always the same. What would you experts out there suggest we do to help him stop coughing at the slightest little puff on an e-cig. I'm stumped I cannot understand why he can't get on with it. The only thing I can think of, maybe, is for him to use juice with more vg than pg mix, although he is now getting reluctant to even buy any more liquid as he has already spent almost 100 euros without being able to use the e-cig for coughing. Any suggestions please would be greatly appreciated, even if I have to buy more juice for him to get him going with this. I can see my bank card coming out trying to help this poor guy icon_shoppingm

Weird. It's not a bad atty/head is it? Have you tried it? Did he inhale when he smoked? It doesn't sound like an allergy to me, but I guess it could be, presumably to PG, in which case you want a pure VG juice (not just more VG than PG).

Thanks for the reply giles but no, nothing to do with the atty. He's tried having puffs on mine, and mine's ok. You could be right there, pure VG might be the way to go for him. I wonder if I could get a small sample bottle somewhere for him to try. Thing is if he still can't get on with it we'd just have to throw the liquid away coz I couldn't use a pure VG especially in tobacco flavour as I can't stand tobacco flavours anymore yuk. Which sites do pure VG juice anyway, anyone know so I don't have to trawl through loads of websites looking for the stuff?

I had the same problem when I first started vaping. At first it happen every single time I had a vape. Then over a period of time (talking weeks) it slowly got less and less.
Then after about 3 months I could suddenly vape without any problems. I found it was worse in the mornings than later in the day. Even now sometimes I can't inhale the vapour as I find it too harsh.
Mixing my own juice to suit me has really helped.
I agree with giles get him to try a juice with a higher vg than pg ratio and see how he does.
Joosejuice has some lovely juices which can be tailor made to suit, although their samples come in 70 pg/30 vg i might be worth giving them a ring to see if they can make one with 70 vg/30 pg and see how he gets on.
Edit to add:- cross posted Joosejuice may be able to make up a 100%vg for him

Oh forgot to answer your question on inhaling. He's quite a heavy smoker and smokes B & H Gold packet, and yes he inhales them when smoking. It is a weird one this

Nothing wrong with a strong gag reflex if you are male (but a real downer if you are female)

I could get them to send the juice to a friend in the UK who is coming over here in a couple of weeks, not worth getting them to send over one small bottle with the postage charges an all.

What resistance is the Clearo? Sounds like the throat hit is to much for him, a few options are reduce the PG as said, reduce the Nic content or increase the resistance of the clearo (lower the voltage)

I got a bit of a sore throat in my early days, and switched to Nucig, who did a pure VG Marlborough which wasn't bad. Your friend could try their B&H. I wouldn't buy anything from them except juice though. skyjay may have a point. Might be worth getting some 0mg nic as well as, say, 18mg. Try the 0 nic, try mixing them. I understand getting fed up with spending money when it gets you nowhere, but compared to the cost of fags this is pretty minor - well worth persevering. I was also quite a heavy smoker, and I saved over £1,000 in my first year.

guys for all your input. I think what I'm going to do is go to our local e-cig shop and get some VG liquid, and just mix up some of his current liquid with a little of the pure VG liquid and try him out on that, increasing the VG until (hopefully) he can at least inhale without gagging and coughing. This, fingers crossed, might just reveal if it is in fact that he needs a higher VG content in his liquids. If this does not help, I can always use a little VG in some of my own liquids which are giving too strong a throat hit (I do have some like that). If that works, then brilliant, we just then need to experiment with the ratio of VG to PG or simply go for pure VG liquids in the future. I have been looking at Puffin e-liquids and they will make up bottles to whatever VG/PG ratio you want, and a 100% VG liquid in whatever flavour you want. Anyone got any comments on Puffin, is their liquid any good, coz I might get him to use them once we establish what VG ratio we need for him.

I was exactly the same when I started, I thought I was going to die with my first puff It gradually got better over a few weeks and is pretty much fine now although I have recently bought a few 'reduced' eliquids (too much of a bargain to miss) and have started coughing when I vape those a bit. I have settled with a 50/50 VG PG mix which doesn't make me cough - the cheapies were more like 70/30 so I guess it's the PG for me too.

puffin are good juice-makers, try him on their 100% vg Flue-cured tobacco, it's lish if he's having no problem with yours, what's the difference in setup & juice to what he's trying to use ?? That would be my starting point, and work through combining yours and his kit and juice to eliminate his problem. Also, vaping in a similar manner to smoking (i.e. how you draw, swizz the vapour round your mouth, then inhale) can do this, as well as not drinking enough fluids. MAny, many factors to consider... I'm sure he'll get there

I think the answers to your friend's problem have already been answered, but here's another little trick that various people have mentioned which might help. As it is the mucous membranes in your mouth which absorb the majority of the nicotine from the vapour, get him to take a mouthful of vapour and then hold it in his mouth, rolling it around to get the flavour, for a few seconds before inhaling. This will make the vapour less irritating and may help your friend. Do let us know if it works, or if you have any joy with the VG addition thingy!
