Fitting any (rofl)alarm in your home would not make as much mess as the b dy burglars would make if they got in.

majority like car alarms ignore them going off as faulty, Yep; a few years ago I was installing a new consumer unit in an old vet's house. Because he used to have the surgery there, there was a decent alarm system in place and I was gubbered if I could find the back-up battery. So, I replaced the CU, and all the time the alarm sounder was going off fit to bust for a good 40-odd minutes until the battery ran down. There was a cop shop at the bottom of the hill - just opposite the driveway to the house, and did they bother? No. None of the neighbours bothered either. Nobody came to look and nobody gave a toss.

We got burgled last Christmas, in a village that has next to no crime. Our neighbours on both sides were at home, and despite them smashing the back window to get in, no one heard anything. We've been burgled before in other properties, and it's a horrible experience, so we had a wired alarm put in that rings our mobile phones when it goes off. That way I can call a neighbour and ask them to have a look out the back should it go off.
We had to spend extra when we got the cats to get sensors that wouldn't go off while they were running round the house, but I know my wife appreciates the security, even if the cynic in me knows it won't make a difference if someone is determined.

People are right when they say a determined burglar will get into your property but if you can have has much visual deterrent as possible it will hopefully make them move on to easier pickings, that might not sound nice but it's sadly the truth. Only a very desperate burglar will tackle a house whose owner has made it as difficult as possible for them.
I'm quite security concious and have a good burglar alarm system, wired are better than battery in my experience and a mate that fits them for a living agrees. Also make sure your external box has a flashing LED. Seeing my little blue light flashing somehow makes me feel better and I like to think subconsciously a burglar doesn't like flashing blue lights for obvious reasons.
There are other simple things that help aswell. An outdoor light with movement detector. The last thing a criminal wants is illumination, especially along with a loud alarm. I also have window stickers stating "this house is protected by a 24 hour monitored alarm system" these are placed in all downstairs windows and external doors. I also have window stickers stating "this property has smart water protection" or something along those lines.
If you know a neighbour who also has an alarm fitted have an agreement with them to call each other in the case of an activated alarm. Also to investigate possibly, taking great care for your own safety, but, DO NOT TACKLE A BURGLAR. I don't want to sound like the big man attitude but I'm very capable if it boils down to violence, I've spent enough hours full contact training and had enough stitches and spent quite a few hours in A&E not to let it worry me but a burglar can usually be scared away if you make enough noise. They would rather scarper empty handed than risk a physical contact, it then becomes a worse crime and heightens the risk of being caught. This isn't always the case though so I advise anybody the first thing to do is contact the police.

get a dog Get two dogs (one for a back up) If on a budget, get a couple of Chinese clones of dogs - 4 weeks delivery and slightly shabbier coats, but still have the same bark
