I would imagine the best thing is to have a monitored alarm system, just seeing the box on the outside should stop anyone thinking of breaking in. Wireless systems will be just as reliable as wired, but you'll have to change the batteries in the sensors periodically.

Don't know how it is round you, but round us the police don't come for ordinary alarms. Security camera?

Quote from a police officer to me when i lived in London "We don't walk the streets that much as we have CCTV, when the crime is reported we go and have a look on our recordings on CCTV and pretty much we will know who the offender is just by the picture, we then go and arrest them but nine times out of ten they get let off and do it all over again" I can still see him now like it was yesterday in my living room telling me this

Really I guess you are mostly just hoping that when they see an alarm or security camera they'll go next door instead. I suspect that having a cheaper car than your neighbours helps more.

majority like car alarms ignore them going off as faulty, easiest would be to mount some CCTV cams [infra red ]and display notices saying CCTV surveilannce, even if you have not got them hooked up,wire showing going into wall will do and high up,

Problem is alarms are no longer that much of a deterrent,if they want it they will risk it,sad but true, most burglaries are not planned unless they know exactly whats in there, its also what make me laugh with insurance ,they want this lock that lock yet brick through window is most or kick to the door, yet last year our double glazing window lock broke so could not open it,called the glazing company round what did they do, two thin metal bars, bent the plastic popped the window out
