Raffles don't give yourself lashings (unless you enjoy them of course) I know how frustrating computer and car problems can be and how much inconvenience they can cause. The tax man can take a run and jump the fine is only £100 + a % of what you owe them, in my case diddly squat, may even get back what I paid them last year though will only buy a couple of pizza hut meals for myself and the children. I hope your neighbours partner is making a recovery, it was lovely of you to take them to the hospital so they could spend some time together. it really does make you think how easily old people are ripped off. Sadly the guinea pig was put to sleep this morning Good news Tesco have confirmed they have received my phone, so hopefully they will fix it under the guarantee as its less than a year old.

This thread has done me good, having just had a major row with my eldest daughter I came on here feeling very unappreciated and generally p**d off. However having read through this thread and taken stock of the year so far I really should stop moaning. Yes the kids are driving me nuts, but they're just being young adults, it just seems their priorities are a little off line putting their social lives first and not thinking how the shopping, cleaning etc gets done while they're out having fun. But we have a roof over our heads, I have a job ( at the moment at least). Apart from stupid arthritis my health is ok. The car works... For now, and I just got a small rebate on my council tax, seems I should have applied for the single person discount as the kids are both full time students. So in comparison to many we're ok so far.
My thoughts today are with a colleague at work who starts jury duty on Monday, yesterday she discovered our employer will not be paying her while she's there and the total reimbursement she can expect from the court is going to leave her £400 out of pocket. She's the only wage earner, her husband is disabled so that's the equivalent of their months food gone. When she desperately tried to get to the bottom of it yesterday she was told very curtly by the court that it was her civic duty and she'd have to lump it! Our employer...the NHS...told her much the same, she looked completely shell shocked, with that kind of support they wonder why so many of us are jumping ship...

That's terrible about your colleague tmgis it too late for her to talk to her GP about it? I've known of people getting their GP to intervene on grounds of 'severe stress' that jury duty could cause. Even if she is too late for that she may not get picked on the day or the defendant may decide to plead guilty at the last moment

The stress route may be a viable one for her, as she nearly lost her husband recently so has been off with stress already, sadly I think even if she doesn't get picked for a case straight away she'll be expected to stay put for her 2 weeks and wait for another one. The worry would be if she's still on a case when her time is up she'll be expected to stay on till it's finished, thus losing even more money.

tmg my daughter was called for jury duty, the defendant plead guilty so she was sent home and didn't have to go back! Sounds like she should have a word with her GP though. If her GP is aware of her problems she could probably just book a phone call which is often easier to get than an appointment!

tmg My friend did jury service. The person pleaded guilty, she was sent home and told to go back in the following week for the next case where she was picked. Worked out she lost 5 days of work out of the 10. Hopefully it will be better for your friend.

Thankyou zeldamum, I look back at my previous comments and wish that jury service was still my friend's only worry, sadly on Monday, the day she should have started, her husband was admitted to hospital and passed away early hours of Wednesday. The response of the court when she told them? 'We'll postpone your jury service until May, but you're still obliged to do it'. So she can look forward to being £400 out of pocket in May instead...

Indeed I will Karma, if I need to! poor girl has had such a rough time recently I don't know how much more she can take. It really is true that awful things happen to the nicest people. She told me today that the cardiac condition her husband had is hereditary and both her sons have it! The only glimmer of light for her is that it has been detected in the boys at a much earlier age than her husband was so at least they will be monitored and treated, but they can't eliminate it completely. So unfair poor thing. Doesn't half make you count your blessings!

Yep, life sucks at times doesn't it At least her sons can be kept an eye on though, so probably best to know about it, but what a worry for her!

Car in for wheel bearing last sat £160, sunday lights on dash abs, back to garage not related to previouse job as it is apparently a rear wheel speed sensor another £160 ker-ching, well it will have to wait a while, then seeing as the mrs has made me book a week away for easter down sunny Cornwall they will be wanting 400 odd quid next month as well, I can see the credit card coming out of hibernation lol.
